Opteron idle temp

zalman 7000alcu running on silent, 4 120mm fans set to low, (one front, one rear,one top one bottom) in a p180 and an opteron 144 running 2.0ghz. 20 c idle 27 load ( 2 instances prime 95, super pi and fAh. I say, something is borked.

It could be broken, but it depends on your ambient (case / room) temperatures.

The zalman is a pretty poor cooler when compared to the newer coolers. I'd say your temps are off by around 10*c.

Actually, ambient in this room is about 62 F or so..

My 144, currently running at stock, idles at 32 an loads at about 38.

Although your Opteron is probably pretty well cooled, I'd too would count an extra 10 to 15°C (by no means bad!)

My water-cooled Opteron hits 36C at load with ambient temps around 65-70F. Granted this stepping seems to run a lot hotter than other Opterons I've had but I'd still say your temps are definetely borked.

Id be more likely to say that the sensor MiranoPoncho is reading is actually the Case Temperature sensor.

17C ambient and 20C idle.... it looks like its the case sensor. 23C ambient in my place, 26C system temp at idle (temps taken at time of posting).

What program are you running to read your temperatures, MiranoPoncho?

I would recommend trying Everest and Speedfan. Everest usually chooses the correct CPU and System temperature probes to read and Speedfan is a nicer program for temperature reading overall in my opinion (plus I use its fan controlling properties.

That doesn't sound like it's off by much, maybe 1-2'C. Before I OC'd my opteron 148 I was reading idle temps at around 23'C and load temps at around 27/29'C, granted it was cold on those days. I've OC'd to ~2.9ghz and my idle temps are 27/28'C with loads peaking at ~38/39'C.

I'll admit that I'm running with the side off my case, there's no airflow for the big typhoon in my small tower otherwise. When I duct my airflow in a way that permits me to run the system with the side on at these clock speeds I'll let you know what my new temps are.

Some opterons just run cool especially if you remove the IHS.
