Hey guys, my question is about optical outputs and inputs for some speakers I'm looking to buy. I'm definitely not an audio expert and have never dealt with optical connections before. I was just curious what would be the right cable to hook up an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum to a set of Logitech's Z-5500 speakers. I am preferably looking for a monster cable since they certainly have a real good rep when it comes to quality. Thanks for any information in advance!

EDIT: Oh yeah, links would be appreciated... thanks!!!

Well optical is the best connection. Dont buy them retail though. Ebay would be your best bet for cheap monster cable. But that would give you the best digital connection.

I see, but are they several types of optical wires that I can buy? Can someone please provide me with a link to the actual product that would serve for the connection?

IMHO Monsters are overrated. They're marketed as high quality cables, and they certainly are decent, but they cost too much. Optical is good, but toslink connectors are quite crap. Besides, most "optical" cables are actually plastic rather than glass.

Here a link comparing the pros and cons between a coax and optical digtial connection

I have the Z-5500 and a SB Live! 5.1 sound card. I used a 6ft coaxial digital cable and the sound is awesome. I have also read that stepping on an optical cable could permanately damage the cable (most high quality ones are made of glass).. Also, I only need to run it less than 10 ft, so optical wouldnt have been such a big advantage and I doubt that there is a noticeable difference in sound quality.

Links to digital cables..

Optical = $11.99 for ft

Coaxial = $7.99 for 6ft. But you will need a mini-jack to mono jack adapter. This goes into your digital out on your sound card and you plug in one end of the coax into it and the other end into the Z-5500 control pod.. I personally have the Phillips digital coaxial cable and it sounds incredible. Got it for $12.99 at Fry's

Just so you know when you use an optical cable you lose 5.1 sorround sound and have to revert to just 2 channels. At least on the z-680s, which are very similar.

Those speakers are a 5.1 setup, so you can easily use digital-via-coax. With Logitech gear, you'll want to use coax for surround. The optical inputs don't always work well with surround. As for your cable... the cool thing about digital is that it'll either work or it won't, especially at the low frequencies used by audio gear. Follow masshass81's advice above. You don't need to spend much money on digital cables. Monster Cable is no better than WalMart cable for digital. Especially if you only need 18 feet of cable or less.

As for digital optical vs digial coax... there's little difference physically. The coax cable will make electrical pulses to send the digital ones and zeros. The optical cable will blink the laser or led light to represent the ones and zeros. The real-world differences deal with the actual devices being used. In your case, the Logitech gear is much better suited for coax. Using optical may limit you to just 2 channel stereo. Do your research, almost every brand is different.... *sigh*

Another way is to use several cables to bring each channel of audio from the card, in its analog form, to the speakers/amp multiple analog inputs. But this would be silly and would probably result in lower quality anyway. The digital coax cable will already carry all 5.1 channels for you.
