Optical mouse laser destroy hardware???

Hey there,

Just heard some guy in one of my classes say that his optical mouse laser can destroy some hardware?? He said that he was untangling his mouse from some cords when the PC was on. He said the laser shined into the clear-window part of his case. He then claimed that this could destroy hardware. I said no way. Who's right??

First off, the source in optical mice is not a laser! It's an LED. BIG difference there.

Second, there is no way in hell it could destroy hardware. You have a better chance messing something up by hotswapping PS/2 keyboards. (I do it all the time and haven't lost a port yet despite the warnings!)

Tell him to stick a fork in his USB port because he's done!

I assume he migh have a Logitech mouse.. my MX500 is really bright.. me being me looked directly into the LED and I was left dazed and had the image of the LED kind of burned onto my retina for a good 30 mins.. never again

But still its an LED damit.. And even a Laser pointer won't have a high enough frequency/energy to cause any damage.. Guess if I said any more and it will be quantum physics and Einstein and Planck E=hf..

Only other thing I can think is equally stupid is using a cardbaord box instead of a case to house your PC.. seen it done And believe me its not a pretty sight..

The optical sensor in a mouse actually relies on a micro-quantum demoleculizer generator. It is diffracted through a hyper-fractal matrix though, which makes it look like a red light. If that matrix becomes unaligned though, it can punch a hole through just about anything, so be careful.
