Seriously though if you can't get a higher spec board for the money available do NOT WORRY...a FX5200 will be fine for 95% of ALL GAMES YET RELEASED ON THE PC MARKET in the last few years..........

Games Played on FX5200
VIETCONG
SOF 1 + 2
NOLF 1 + 2 + 3(CJ)
PAIN KILLER
CALL OF DUTY
HALO (800 X 600 and STILL SLLlooooowww)
FARCRY (Plays OK at 800 X 600 OK)
MIDNIGHT NOWHERE
MOH (various)
KOTOR (a bit jerky sometimes)
RTCW
QUAKE 1+2+3
UNREAL 2
PRINCE OF PERSIA
SERIOUS SAM 1 + 2
THE THING
HITMAN 2
BROKEN SWORD 3 (TSD)
and a lot more...there just the ones I can see as I sit typing.

So a good selection there of games new and old and only problems with 3 games.....one of which, HALO, is more down to it being piz-poor anyway.

So if you cant get a higher spec card for the same wonga get one (just remember you will lose detail in some NOT all games)......s'funny how no-one has asked what games you are going to play......but then again if your daft enough to buy new hardware just to play a new game (like the FC crew....ooooohhhh that makes FC a *bargain* then doesn't it...............#laced with the best Britsh sarcasm) then what answers do you expect from a bunch of clowns?

HTH

my geforce2 mx plays halo at 800x600 perfectly

I used to have a fx5200 256mb and so did a few of my friends. That card is no better than a paper weight. Do not buy it.

Okay. I have the FX5200 256mb paperweight. Call me what you will, I was looking at the RAM and the fact that it was at least better than the Ti200 that it replaced. Now I know so much more and I understand the error of my ways. Mea Culpa.

It's already installed, I doubt Directron will take it back, so I'm kind of stuck with it. Since I'm already spending cash on a new mobo and CPU (AMD 64 3000+), I can't justify the outlay for a new 9800 Pro or 9600 Pro right now, so would we all agree that my best bet is to seek out a refurb'd or used Ti4200?

Well, I'd say go for a 9600 pro/xt or 9800 SE before going GF4 Ti used or refurbed. First of all for the same price you get new hardware, as well as DX9 support, gf4 would be faster in 8.1 but 9 is becoming much more important.

I'd say 9600XT. I'll prolly get swamped by the "9800p" robots, but the 9600XT is currently over $60 cheaper, its DX9 compatible, which can't be said about the Ti4200. I get 50-60FPS in Far Cry @ highest settings (including high AA/AF) with a 9600XT. If you are looking for something in the $140 and less category, go with a 9600XT. If you are looking for something in the $200 and less category, go with the 9800pro. If you want something under $100, then you'll probably want to go with a Ti4200 128mb.

9500 pro, used, is almost as good as the 9600XT and about 2/3 the price.
