...and there is a lottery winner(s) every week. But you know what, as often as people play the lottery, it is pretty dam rare to win it.

-KeithP

Yes, but no one acts shocked when it's announced that someone, somewhere, won the lottery. No one is sitting around staring at their TV watching the lottery drawing thinking "HOLY FUCK, WE HAD NO IDEA THAT COULD EVER HAPPEN!" unless they're the actual winner. That's how it used to be with mass shootings; I remember the shock and disbelief when Columbine happened. Now? We just reset our "__ Days Without Mass Shooting" calendar and carry on like nothing happened. It's just like the lottery, actually; it's pretty goddamn rare that it will happen to you specifically, but it's happening to someone almost daily around the country.

How to handle situation:

Don't mention shooter's name.
Make no attempt to "understand" shooter's motivation. It has no bearing on punishment.
Dispose of shooter. Let him die unmourned and unknown.

maybe we can start forcing crazy people into mental institutions like we use to do, before they shoot people.

This happens enough now that I just ask "how many" and "is shooter dead" then move on.

CNN doesn't have a single camera on the ground yet. I know it's in the middle of nowhere but not even an affiliate?

They keep cutting staff now that they rely more and more on unpaid citizen journalists.

Which has nothing to with what I was addressing. Jules used words that suggested he believed mass shooting weren't rare. I disagreed. How people react wasn't part of the response.

Mass shootings aren't rare though. We're averaging more than one a day in 2015. It might be rare to be the victim of a mass shooting, but the events themselves have become tragically commonplace in our society.

As defined there, sure, but along the lines of this story and Virginia Tech and etc, they are a small percentage of a small percentage. A lot of the examples in yours are gang-related, home invasion/robberies gone worse, drunk idiots at parties or bars "taking things outside", etc.

This is what bothers me - people anonymously encouraging the guy to do it via social media:

According to the source close to the investigation, authorities are looking at social media posts between a person they believe may have been the shooter, and others.

The conversation happened Wednesday night on 4chan.

In it, the writer talks about planning to carry out a shooting. Others egg him on, giving him suggestions on how to do it, and the type of weapons to use.

The responses are mixed -- with some users characterizing the would-be gunman as a pathetic loser. Others called him a twisted hero.

In the posts, there is a reference to the UC Santa Barbara shooter, who wrote a manifesto and videoed himself before opening fire a year ago.

"This is the only time I'll ever be in the news. I'm so insignificant," reads an apparent post by the would-be Oregon gunman.

I don't think this will make a difference. The aim is to inflict as much damage and not to be notorious. Notoriety just came with it.

Depends on the shooter. The o.g. kids from Columbine certainly wanted the notoriety.

Thanks for the explanation! I was beginning to worry we had a gun culture problem in our country. While you're busy minimizing this, please minimize the Holocaust for us, too. Hey, it only happened once on that scale, right?

Yeah, this shit again. Prez Obozo is speaking now. Can't wait for when he talks about the 2nd Amendment.

Instead of paying a professor 200,000 dollars a year install some damn security. Arm the teachers! If you want to stop it on the street enforce stop and frisk!

Every week we hear about this shit.

You can't be serious. Obozo just said states with gun laws have fewer shootings. LMAO! Yeah buddy, your own home town Shitcago?

BTW, some 45 died in Shitcago last week. Where's the outrage?
