So you think the War On Drugs has been successful then?

War on drugs works in some south east Asin countries and I'd deploy that tactic. If you are a pusher, life in prsion for you! If you are a user, five year mandatory minimum and mandatory rehabilitation.

How about upbringing/lack of decent morality? You think every person that kills someone DUI or in a drunken bar fight has some mental affliction? That's besides the point anyways. Alcohol directly leads to violent behavior via inhibition of good judgment/self-restraint, and if no one consumed alcohol or other drugs with similar effects, you would see that kind of violence plummet. What makes alcohol sacred and not a gun, something which has negligible effect on the mental state of a person using one (as you admitted), and is routinely used not just for personal pleasure but for self-defense?

You write exactly what i have written before. The wrong state of mind. May that be anger or a real mental disorder.
The cause can even be a crime passionnel where a lover kills another lover.
Such state of minds are serious.
But the truth is that a gun is designed to kill and when there is quick access to , it will be used more often. For example, here we see a rise in violent deaths, mostly because the criminals execute each other with ak-47 type material. Now that there is an influx of weapons in the EU coming from former Yugoslavia and other countries with war, there is an increase in such killings. While the police is doing its best to raid all storage and houses where such weapons might be stored. Guns are designed to kill. A gun and a volatile personality are a dangerous combination.

In many parts of the country they are about as low as anywhere else.

Losing your boundaries is why people like to drink alcohol, that's pretty much an inherent property. For many people it's more a matter of unwinding, greater confidence, etc rather than going full angry-violent-drunk, but to blame an underlying condition when hundreds of thousands commit crimes every year under the influence of alcohol is underselling the damage it has on society. I'd argue that because drugs more directly cause a person to lose their mind than guns, that they are more damaging to society on the whole.

Drugs release the underlying condition. But people need to unwind.
That is why alcohol should stay legal and weed but everything else not.
It all comers down to responsibility. If you can not handle alcohol do not drink. Or at least not so much. It is not easy, i know. But it can be done.
But again, if someone becomes aggressive while drunk, there is something wrong with that person. Maybe is alcohol a good way to determine ones subconscious mental state.
Handy for psychiatrists.

I should note that it should only be legal to drink at home or in a place with a license such us a cafe/bar with a terrace . Same goes for weed smoking. At home or in a licensed coffeeshop. Consuming on the street should be illegal. As it already is in most places. No opportunity for disturbing other people.

I can honestly say that in comparing this shooting with previous ones (Lanza for example), they did a much better job of not announcing the shooters name like he just won a gold medal for the USA in Moscow. His face wasn't posted on every other site across the internet either.

Example: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...me-official-says-of-gunman-in-oregon-shooting
I noticed that as well so that only the morbidly curious would have to dig to get to know the shooter rather than have his life story plastered everywhere. I wonder if it had to do with the psychologists grave warning, albeit from years ago, that if the media continues to offer the kind of exposure that it is capable of to the wrong people, it will encourage more events like this. I saw more exposure of the army veteran that blew passed the staff to intervene, was shot seven times, and lived to tell about it. I felt that this kind of focus emboldens the good guys for once.

I forgot the name of the group but they have been pressuring news agencies to not print names or faces of mass shooters because giving them attention also gives them incentives

Most of these guys who are doing these things feel satisfied when they see their name on every news station out there. Giving them no spotlight is a step in the right direction.

Perhaps there should be a spotlight.... One that shines on the gallows that hangs the son of a bitch if caught alive without going out like a pussy.

Good on them! You recalled more than I did, I only remember the video about the expert citation about it from a very long time ago. The group in question must have picked up the ball and ran with it.

I agree wholeheartedly. I thought the coverage, aside from what I heard about CNN flouting the local LE and publishing the shooter's name, was well done.
