Original XBox/XBox Live question

OK, I'm a n00b when it comes to console games. The last console I owned was a SNES back in the day - I've been sticking with PC games the last few years. A couple of weeks ago, though, my brother gave me his original XBox (NOTE: not a 360, just a plain ol' XBox) and a stack of games. I've got it on my home network and it reports that all connections are good. On a PC, I've created an XBox Live Silver account (the free one), but I'm having problems using it on the XBox. When I try to connect either thru the console itself or thru a game, it gives me two options: to create an account, or to recover one. If I choose to create one, it asks for a subscription code, which I don't have since all my games are used. If I try to recover, it asks for credit card info associated with my account, but since it's a free account I haven't associated a CC.

My questions:

1. Can a current Silver account be used on an old XBox, or do the old XBoxes only support subscription-based accounts?

2. If a Silver account can be used, how do I do it?

I don't remember much about the original XBL, but a silver account wouldn't work because all you could really do on the original xbox was play online. So if you want to play online you need to buy a gold subscription.

The old XBOX Live was nothing more than an online gaming service. There was no Marketplace and such like the 360 has.

The code it was asking for was an XBOX Live Subscription code.

The original XBOX Live didn't distinguish between Silver and Gold. You either paid for online gaming, or you didn't.

Edit: As stated above, you need to sign up for XBOX Live Gold in order to allow your account to play old XBOX games online.

Thanks for the quick responses. Now that that's settled, I have another question: Is there any reason to have an Original XBox on a home network other than online play?

if you mod it you can make it one hell of a media server.

only downside is no high definition

still have 2 XBMC machines running strong (but noisely). XBMC is one of the best inventions ever.

Silver only works on the 360. The original Xbox only had a single level of service, what is now considered Gold.

Edit: LOL, I guess I had this thread open in a new tab for a while. This has been answered.
