HOLY POO POO! I feel like an idiot! I am playing around with this and I can't figure out squat!!!!! I just feel very overwhelmed at the moment. Kinda like I did when I got my first computer that had Windows 95 on it. I had no idea how to get around in it. Well that is how I feel now, like a total NOOB!!!! I know that it will take some time, but wow! I am using RedHat 8.0 but may try out Mandrake (read somewhere that it is easie r to get around in). I was hoping to set up a RedHat box at home and just leave it running Seti and set up a second to learn, well I may have to just set one up to learn. Well anyway wish me luck! I did not think that the learning curve was going to be this steep!

Well at least you're not taking the "make it work like Windows" approach. You'll never learn anything that way.

LOL!!!! I have been wanting to do this for a while! I jsut needed an extra system to do it. So now I have it and I am going to learn it. I hope to have my house Semi M$ free! I still have a system for my kids that run all their learning kid games and my wife probably wont go for the change, she freaked out when I went from 98-2K-XP! But for me, I hope to get myself knowledgable enough so that I can not use M$ at all!!!!! I will definatly come here for help when I need it. I printed out a poop load of stuff so I will swim through that for a while!

Hehe I have disk for Red Hat 6.0, 8.0. | Mandrake 8.2, 9.0 | Some version of debian and caldera all lying on my desk right now. And on top of that I have about 3 versions of freeBSD and two of openBSD. I was looking for my freeBSD disks. I just had them piled up in a drawer.

Installing mandrake 9.0 is as easy as installing windows. Now, if only I can figure out how to get my wireless card working...

[edit] We will never be Windows free, unless you don't play games! (Or use a financial/tax software)[/edit]

That in my opinion is about the only reason I still use Windows for anything. Games at home, and Quickbooks at work. GnuCash is getting there, but it really isn't close yet. Thankfully we have VMWare If any of you guys need a hand feel free to shoot me a PM, I'm around a good bit, I just don't tend to post to much.

Oh and hi Poof! Cold enough for you yet?

Oh, don't give me that 'No games for Linux' crap. Many great games have been ported to Linux, and there is a very clear trend of game developers releasing Linux versions of new games. Doom 3, UT 2003, RTCW, all available for Linux since day one. If first person shooters aren't your thing, a port of Neverwinter Nights is in the works. I look forward to that one.

And don't forget about the tons and tons of free and shareware games available for Linux.

I hope everyone at least tries Linux sometime. I think that a lot of you would really enjoy it. I do.

Bad news: I can't figure out where I put the Mandrake 8.2 CDs.

Good news: I'm downloading the Mandrake 9.0 ISO files now and will burn them to CD then install.

I'm a Linux newbie too (about 20 hours experience) and the 'Great AT Linux/BSD/*nix FAQ' in Operating Systems is a great thread, you might want to take a look. Should be stickied at the top.

LOL I agree man! I have been playing around a little in my spare time (have 2 kids, time is limited) and boy it's enough to make you screem! One hell of a learning curve. I am used to going to a PC (Windows) and doing whatever I want and knowing exactly where to go. This will be a long process but I should have lost of fun. Plus this kinda gets those ol juices flowing again, getting amped about getting on the PC and learning. Kinda like when I was a Win-noob! This is gonna be great!

I am not really finding linux that hard at all. Now I guess you can't call me a noob. I have used freeBSD and other BDSs for awhile now. But that has always been from the command line. I never saw a point in installing X for a small server. Didn't reall need the ease of managment features from a GUI when your only dealing with about 4 accounts!

I would recommend reading Mac OS X unleashed. The reason being is that it explains the thought process behind the nix way of thinking. Its in there for the transfering Mac users but I even understood things better after reading it. Once you understand the nix way of doing things you understand alot more. I would bet there are some good sites out there on that such topic....

You all have to do like Yoda said - You must unlearn what you have learned.

If any of you ever remember playing around with say DOS 5 and windoze 3.x or windoze 286/386, then think of Linux like that... The GUI in your linux distro is truly separate from the rest of your OS.

the thought process behind the nix way of thinking

UNIX (Solaris, BSD, Linux, etc..) is more a way of life as each install and machine has its own very unique settings and personality. No other type of computing has given me so much joy/heartache, its can be frustrating but conversly the most rewarding when you create and configure and tweak a box to your liking. Win32 can only go so far in tweaks and customizing, even less with MAC OS. *NIX is almost a neverending story. I had a Linux (Mandrake 6.x) for years that I loved, I kept the HDD for posterity as I couldnt bring myself to erase or trash 3 years of tweaking and configuring.

Thanks for the tip Remy, I'll check that out.
