I have a question that I am not sure where to start, maybe someone can help point me in the right direction. My neighborhood has been pretty bad lately with people stealing bbq's from backyards and stuff missing from garage to flowers in the garden. I would like to set up some outside camera's to record 24/7 on my computer with me deleting the video weekly if nothing bad happens. I would like to set up 2-3 outside camera's that can record at night time and then record to my computer. Although 1 can do to start it off if the cost runs too high. Can someone help point me in the right direction.

Any help in recommendation of type of cameras would be nice and a little guidance in setting it up also as I have never done this and really at this point it is a necessity.

Thanks in advance.

While I don't have much expertise in the area of surveillance (especially with outdoor cameras), your best bet would be to go to a local "security" or some other shop that deals with security equipment. They can give you the best advice (especially to hide them, so thieves won't see them).

On a side note, if you have three cameras that are "streaming" video back to a central computer, I'd advise getting a large hard drive. Assuming 1 Gigabyte of video per hour per camera, you would need a capacity of at least 504GB ((24hr * 7 days) * (1GB * 3 cameras)). That is going to be quite a video log, if the unthinkable happens, and you have to quickly review the footage.

I'm interested in this topic as well. I recently spotted something that could serve this purpose, but it seems like its meant to be used for sports filming or something like that.

This kind of stuff is expensive, actually.

Thanks a lot for your help guys. I have found a decent product as well but nothing that really jumps out in this category where lots of people are saying it is awesome!

Anyways, this is what I came across. Q-See

that q-see seems nice. i seriously wonder how it performs over say a xv-5000 webcam though. (forget the logistics of running 150ft of usb cable, im just saying.)

See if you can find a model that is motion activated, that way you need less HDD space and you can skip straight to the part where wild animals/thieves/zombies are prowling around your back yard.

I recommended this to a co-worker recently. They have a couple good reviews and they accommodate both wired and wireless, for a decent price. Email motion sensed events, upload to offsite FTP (for additional security in case the system storing the video feeds is compromised or also stolen). They arent bad for the buck.

I've actually installed 3 of these q-see systems that are bought at Costco. The online software is darn good 95% of the time, but every once in a while it crashes firefox. The DVR stores all the video for over a week before it deletes it. LCD screen is very handy on the DVR, had a rash of graffiti and actually showed the footage to a police officer and he was impressed. Night vision is good to about 30ft, probably want to upgrade a camera or 2 if you want really clear night vision.
