Overclocking 6800gt?

Whats the best program for osing a 6800 gt? Also...will this lower the life of my card significantly? And....whats a safe temp to stay at? It wont get louder (may sound stupid but im scared the fansll spin faster in effect heh)?

IShould i enable fan always on? Should i use standard 2d or 3d performance? I only click apply these settings when windows starts if the oc is stable, right?

Well when you manually change the frequencies it will test them. If the test passes, it doesn't necessarily mean you wont fry your card. Like when you go play Doom 3 for 5 hours straight with the Core at or over 420Mhz could do some damage.

Fans should be always on. I personally use standard 2D performance. I don't know why anyone would want to overclock 2D without having some heavy duty desk top applications.

I overclock using cool bits as well. I use 400/1100 or at the most 415/1100.

Errr...increments of 5 on both core and memory at the same time? Should i test for artifacts with 3dmark01?

The fans are temperature sensitive, they never run at full speed except during booting windows. Unless there is a subpar cooler on a 6800gt there shouldn't be any problem running at ultra and slightly faster than ultra speeds. The chip on a gt and an ultra is identical, use coolbits, if you see any artifacts back down a little bit and you'll be fine. You can try detecting optimal frequencies in the control panel, in my experience it's a little too agressive.

I'd find your memories max, then your GPU's. That way you know which is holding you back, whereas if you do both at the same time you won't know which is holding you back without extra testing.
