Overclocking a Barton 3200+

I'm not so new to overclocking, I've messed with all my machines in the past, but this one is killing me.

Regardless of what I set the multiplier to, when I boot the system it always reverts to stock. Does something need to be unlocked? I read somewhere on the vast web that these newer Bartons cannot be overclocked. Any truth to that?

Running with an A7N8X-X board.

I have a 400 MHz version of the XP 3000 in that same motherboard (and I would say that I know only a bit about OC-ing), and I've bumped it to a 416 MHz FSB speed without any real trouble, but the multiplier on mine is locked, all right. Up until now, I have just paid the difference in cost to get as much cpu as I thought I could afford, and remained dubious about the OC phenomenon. But with MB's based on NF2 chipsets, it just seems to work so easily and dependably!

The multiplier is locked and can't be unlocked, you're restricted to OC'ing via the FSB. Any Barton's post week 39 have a locked multipler.

I was fortunate enough to get hold of 3000+ with an unlocked multiplier and have it running at 2500GHz.

It's locked, you need to raise the FSB. For example, my Athlon 2800+ runs at a 333 MHz FSB, and my pc3200RAM ran at pc2700 (166 MHz SDR) speeds to match that

SO, I upped my FSB from 166 to 180, raising my CPU speed from 2075 to 2225.
This can be explained once you know the multiplier of your CPU, mine has a 12.5 x 166 as the default. It's not that hard to do, all you need is a calculator, and about 10 minutes, just remember to do it SLOWLY.

Then later I upped the FSB to 184, giving me my current 2300 MHz

I have same mobo as you BTW, I :heart: it.

edit: In a nutshell, heres what you need to know "locked multiplier X FSB = CPU frequency" For your processor and mine anyway

yeah yeah i know how overlcocking works, i just didn't know if that particular chip was locked bummer!

also i'm a bit unfamiliar with this board/bios. when the machine boots it says my memory is running at 166MHz single channel mode. it is two sticks (not dual channel) of pc2700, which should run at 333. is this 166 that i'm seeing really equating to 333 since it is ddr?

Yes, 166mhz at DDR is 333mhz.

Single channel mode sounds correct as I don't believe that version mobo offers dual-channel

Yes

133 = DDR266
166 = DDR333
200 = DDR 400

If your system is reporting single channel then it supports dual channel. Try running your memory slot1 and slot3 or different color slots (depends on motherboard) for dual channel.

If your system is reporting single channel then it supports dual channel. Try running your memory slot1 and slot3 or different color slots (depends on motherboard) for dual channel.
