Overclocking a Sempron 64 E6

I recently bought a 2500 Sempron 64 (stock 1.4ghz) and paired it with a Soltek K8AN2E-GR board, BIOS T1.4 Right now the proc is 24 hour Prime stable @2.044ghz with a x3 HT Freq, and mem divider running 1:11 (started at 133Mhz). Is there a way to change the multiplier on this board running an E6 cpu? There's no option in the Freq/Volt menu. Could the CPU disable this or is there a jumper on the board I haven't set?

No. The cpu multiplier is fixed. It can be adjusted downward on some boards for using higher fsb settings. You must be running it close to 300 now, so that's a pretty good overclock for that cpu and board.

Is it fixed because of the CPU or board? You're right, I am running close to 300; 290 to be exact. I might look into getting faster rated RAM to improve performance even more. What would be a good choice? DDR500?

From what I've experienced, Semprons from the 2800+ model and below are completely multiplier locked and have CnQ disabled. Models 3000+ and higher are downward multiplier unlocked and have CnQ. The downward unlocked multiplier doesn't do squat, though, as it's hard enough as it is getting the HTT high up enough to give the chip a good OC.

Ram may help your performance a bit but you wont be able to overclock your CPU much more. Your limiting factor will be your CPU's multiplier (7x, unless I miss my guess).

You are correct. The 2500+ model has a multiplier of 7x, so someone with this chip is going to need a truly amazing board to hit a decent overclock. DFI comes to mind when it comes to excellent overclocking. My old DFI NF3 hit 345HTT, which would have yielded a decent 2415mhz overclock on a 2500+ chip. Not too shabby for a $50 processor!

Yeah I know RAM won't help with the overclock, but it will improve memory performance by allowing to run at a higher speed than the 186mhz it's running now.

345HTT! Lol. My board can boot @295 but isn't Prime stable.

Overall I'm pleased with the results, though I wanted to reach 2.2ghz. Still, 604 Mhz OC isn't bad at all. I upgraded from a Sempron 2400 Socket A that I slightly OC'd to 2.0ghz w/ 1:1 memory.

yo dude mine has like you except the board. i have DFI NF4X-AL (Infinity). i can go to 2415 with 345 HTT and using divider 1:0.5 (ram@100). after oc my ram is 170.5 and cant go any further than 345 HTT nor 1:0.6 (ram@133) divider. i havent try for prime95 but im doing it alright for benchmarking for hours. I got 14,xxx on stock and 19,xxx on oc (3d2k1). all at stock cooling. temps 33c.
does anyone can help me to get more HTT? it will unstable in 350HT...
thanks in advance.

You should definitely be able to get to 2.2 GHz. Try raising the voltage, lowering the memory setting to 100MHz. You should be able to keep the HT multiplier at 3x, but you can always lower that if the voltage and memory settings aren't enough.

2ghz is not bad at all. You have about Sempron 3300+ Performance. Thats close to a 3000+ s754 Newcastle A64. I wouldn't be able to complain about that

I was able to get my brothers 2600+ Non-64Bit Sempron to 8x315 which ='s 2500mhz. Paid $72 for it at the time. So, better than 3500+ A64 performance for $72 is not to shabby. It stays at 2.4ghz or so for peace of mind purposes.

Yup, and Intel makes Celeron D 310 chips. Either yields aren't good (not likely) or there is demand for chips that are $5 cheaper.

To OEM's, $5/per cpu, makes or breaks making a profit. Even with lower volume builders, $5 can make a worthwhile difference.

The problem is the board. It only goes up 300 FSB. That'll get me to 2.1, but not beyond that. Any refurbished DFI's around?

I had a little bit of sucess with clockgen, pushing it to 315fsb or 2.2ghz, but it wasn't Prime stable. Oh well. I've clocked it back down to 290 and it's purring along just fine. I really like the Sempron line. If you OC you can get good performance out of em. Will there be any 939 Semprons? In two or three years will we have dual-core Semprons? Lol.

That is a very nice overclock indeed!

We are talking about the Palermo core sempron, correct?
(If so, I am building almost the exact same thing. Parts to be here in a couple of days).

Are you using the stock HSF?
What are your CPU temps, idle and max?

Thanks!

We are talking about the Palermo core. I'm running 39 idle/ 46 load using the stock HSF. I would suggest buying a DFI board due to the better OC and stability.

Quick question for you guys. With the rig my sig, do I need to get a PS with more watts? Right now I'm using the 350 watt PS that came with my Antec case.

Hi,

i have a Sempron 64 2800+ on an Abit NV8, and it is running at 2.4Ghz @ 1.48v.

nforce4 4x chipset is a really good overclocking option, i got to 2600mhz to 2650mhz stable, then i tried 2700mhz and 2800mhz with 1.7v, the system booted ok, but it won't go into windows, it's because of the vcore, the thing is that my motherboard goes from 1.7 straight to 1.85v so i decided better not to raise to that until i get some proper cooling, like a zalman or a thermalright xp120.

but at least i know mi cpu can go up to 2800mhz, and probably up to 3000-3200Mhz.

Greetings from chile
