Hi guys,

I just want to make sure I got this right, to overclock I:

1) raise FSB
2) raise ram speed to match BUS speed 1:1 optimal
3) reboot comp, go into windows to check for instability

That's it?

If problems:

1) raise vcore a by smallest increment until I reach 1.525volts (3.0 prescott)
2) raise vdimm until i reach max raise of .3volts
3) lower FSB and ram speed as well as vdimm and vcore

That's it?

What if I forget the default settings and want to reset the bios? How do I do that?

Thanks guys

2) raise ram speed to match BUS speed 1:1 optimal If you leave the divider or ratio at 1:1, the ram speed will automatically adjust upward with the CPU
3) reboot comp, go into windows to check for instability Well, thats a "quick and dirty" check. Use Prime95 for CPU, memtest86 for ram. If you OC both (cpu, ram) at the same time and its unstable, use those proggies to narrow down which is the prob. Otherwise you're raising vcore or vdimm willy-nilly.

That's it? No, use motherboard monitor 5 etc to keep tabs on temps so you don't fry something

If problems:

Use above proggie to determine the cause of instability. Or use a ram divider to lower ram frequency to focus on CPU

1) raise vcore a by smallest increment until I reach 1.525volts (3.0 prescott)
2) raise vdimm until i reach max raise of .3volts
3) lower FSB and ram speed as well as vdimm and vcore

What if I forget the default settings and want to reset the bios? How do I do that? See you mobo manual for "Clearing The CMOS". That'll set BIOS back to default so it'll boot again.

Thanks guys

Andy

See the sticky in this section if you haven't already. Also, p4's don't suffer from running ram asynch from what I read. I don't do Intel, I'm into AMD ATM. Look at old posts by a member named Duvie. He used to post a lot of p4 OC data back in the pre- AMD 64 days.

Thanks Fern

So technically I could just make sure that my divider ratio is set to 1:1, and then I just oc my CPU. This will automatically OC my ram as well? So if I want to just OC the computer a little, I could just raise the FSB until the computer doesn't boot. Then I could Clear the CMOS then lower the FSB gradually from the previous point? If I wanted to OC more, or make sure that at a certain level the computer is running well, I can use the proggies?

Thanks

I will check out the posts by Duvie.

technically in any OCing endeavor you should isolate the cpu initally until you find its limit...a 1:1 ratio may limit the clock before the CPU has reached its limits....

I would run 3:2 ratio and keep ram out of it until the cpu cant run prime95 for an hour...then w\hen you hit the limit run prime95 for 4-24 hours (depending on your definition of stable and apps you use)

ram timings and speed comes with consolidation and tweaking....

CPU speed in both platforms means far more then ram speed or timings...get most clock first then find out what speed the ram can run at...go with bandwdith over timings necessarily on the P4 but vice versa for an AMD64 system....

Would it be better to run the CPU at a higher clock and not have the FSB=the ram speed? or would it be better to have a lower clock where the ratio was 1:1?

Also, I have a p4p800 deluxe mobo, and I can't find the clear cmos instructons in the manual. Is it the same thing as loading the setup defaults at the exit screen of the BIOS?

Thanks

definitely!!! clock speed or raw speed means more...get the highest clock and then set ram to work with it..,...Then at that poin you can play with 5fsb up or down to try to get the ram better but if you cant then you will be losing performance....

I have a whole series of benches if you need to see my proof of this with a p4 architecture.....

dont get me wrong it loves bandwidth, but fact is speed is what will give you bigger gains...in gaming this is an anamoly only because cpus can possibly not be the bottleneck and thus the gpu like more ram speed at that point.....You need to play but you will see in the +/-5 fsb band will be the best performance once you find that cpu limit....
