To be honest, I think it's time AMD offered something to further distance the FX line of A64s from the rest, other than an unlocked multiplier.
At its introduction, it offered a full 1MB L2 cache, and a dual-channel memory controller, where the regular A64 offered 512KB/1024KB L2, with only a single-channel memory controller.
So at the time, the FX was the 'high tier' offering from AMD in performance terms, and its price premium was more justified.
Perhaps a special low-latency L2, or maybe even a quad-channel memory controller would put it back up there?
