Overclocking i7 2600k

I have a GA-Z68XP-UD5 motherboard with a NH-D14 cooler.

The highest I have successfully been able to run prime95 with voltage set to AUTO is 4.28GHz at 42x. The lowest manual voltage I have been able to run with 4.28GHz is 1.4v - this seems a little high, though cpuz claims that the voltage is almost always at 1.28v. The temperature stays under 70C.

I am confused why I cannot run easily at 4.2GHz when I see others running at 5GHz with air cooling.

Is my situation normal? How can I overclock more effectively? Any help would be very much appreciated!

Turn off C1E and speedstep in BIOS. gl

auto is the problem, i believe you need to dial in the settings to get the max oc as its a careful balancing act between temps and voltage

Yes it is. My i5 2500K does 4.5GHz at 1.275v and no more than 1.32v at full load. I can reach 5GHz at 1.45v but it runs a little hot.

I've got a Msi p67a-gd65 2600k at just a mild overclock @ 4.0 ghz and use just under 1.2 volts of juice myself for stability(1.185v) (might drop it down a tiny bit more) 16 gigs (four 4 gigs) of Corsair Vengence 1600(1.5v). I don't ever try to go over 1.3 volts for longevity sake of processor. I'm using a Zalman 9900 cooler (round copper, like the old 9500 style one but bigger) I don't think 2600k would need more that 1.26 something to run stable at 4.2 In my honest opinion. But of course every processor is different. Sorry about the rant of my system, But yeah I think you are running very excessive voltage for that overclock. I hope this helped a little. Good luck
