I have an amd barton 2500+ with 512 megs of ddr. Together with a geforce 6800 standard, hooked into a 500w powersupply. I tried new drivers (using 66.93 atm), nForce drivers, and tempatures seem fine. and I can't seem to get anything to speed up. half-life 2 plays at 30-50 fps on average, sometimes alot less, and doom 3 plays at 20-40. i'm at my wits end, I don't know what to do. People tell me to overclock my amd 2500+, but I don't know if using stock cooling is a good idea.

I don't have an amd, but if the HS/HSF is any good, you should be able to get at least a little more juice out of it.

Have you tried oc'ing your vid card? There are plenty of tools on the web to help you do that. Just do a google search for 'em. Good luck!

despite the fact that it says 'extreme overclocking' on the box, it does it poorly. coolbits freaks out and doesn't let me overclock it above 1 mhz, atleast on 2d. I upped it by 50 mhz on core and memory with 3d, and it gave me no improvement.

I kept my 2200+ overclocked to 2600+ speeds with stock cooling, but I was having a couple of problems with it. You can do it, but I wouldn't trust the stock HSF very far. They're good for cooling at factory clocks, but they're made with the assumption that they won't have to deal with much extra heat.

What says "extreme overclocking" on the box? The AXP says "eXtreme Performance" on the box.

Also, a 2500+ should OC nicely. I don't know how far it will go with the stock HSF though. That partly depends on your case cooling.

As far as the 6800nu, I have a BFG 6800nu clocked to 380MHz core, and let me look, 800MHz on the RAM. The screen will get a "pink" overcast while playing 3D games after about an hour or two though.

That really annoys me cuz my 6800GT only clocks to 390MHz core.

Sorry to rant, yes you should be able to OC that chip more.

Just keep an eye on temps as you raise the voltage (vcore). Use MBM5 for this (sys log feature). If you find you need to raise the vcore further to be stable, but it's already too hot under load, well at that point go get a better cooler.

A few ideas....before you start overclocking, make sure XP is using all of your CPU Cache. You have to do a registry tweak. Heres the directions:

run regedit, then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double click SecondLevelDataCache, and type 200 into the box. Make sure you set it to DECIMAL, not hexadecimal. 200 is 512KB, 400 is for 1024. By default XP only recognizes 256 of it I beileve. Maybe that'll help some.

That'll set you up to use all 512KB L2 cache. I noticed after enabling that all my temps went up several degrees when running Prime95 full load with max heat option. So aparently I was only using half the available cache lol. I don't know about getting all 128KB L1 Cache tho. Prime95 only id's my Barton 2500+ as having 64 L1 cache, which I know isn't right. Anyone know about this?

Overclocking is never guaranteed to be safe, regardless of what you do.

You should be able to OC with no problem...My old Barton 2500 was OC at 3100 with the stock heat sink and no + for the V. Those Barton 2500 are one of the best OC on the market...

don't use the stock cooler you have, I, have an AMD 3200+ and i OC'ed from the begining with a stock cooler, and my CPU was over 150 Fahrenhet, and my system was completly unusable, so i bought a new '
OC cooler, i suggest, if you want to OC your PC, that you buy a new cooler, especially if you want to OC it..
