P180 PSU - which one?

Looking at building a new system:
AMD x2 3800
512mb ram
mobo uncertain - probably Asus A8n-sli premium
gpu uncertain - probably a 6800S or an X800 GTO-2 (got another thread choosing those)

Never overclocked before, but I plan on looking into overclocking whatever I can - gotta start somewhere!

I plan on getting the P180 case over the Sonata II for the extra quietness (it'll be running in my room).

Now, the question is - can anybody recommend a PSU for this caseand setup? I understand some people have had problems with cables having difficulty reaching, or having a PSU with the fan in the wrong position (or something like that)...

Dude.......not to pop your bubble or crap on your thread....

But this subject has been hashed and rehahsed a kazillion times...

using your Anandtech search youi can find all the posts concerning PSU`s and the Antec 180.....

Or just google it...you will get an aswer alot quicker than from these boards at this time of night!!

Good Luck!!

Put in your config (at 100% utilization), then multiply the power required by 0.8 (some systems take up to 80% of the power from the 12V rails). Divide the number you get by 12. This number is the number of amps required from the 12V rail(s). Choose any PSU from reputable manufacturers that produces a number higher than that (use a safety factor).

For example, if you end up with a PSU rating of 300W:

300W * 0.8 = 240W
240W/12V = 20A
20A * 1.25 (safety factor of 25%) = 25A

So then I would pick a PSU that produced a combined minimum of 25A on the 12V rail(s), made by PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, OCZ, Fortron/FSP, Sparkle, Enermax, etc.

EDIT: Well then, I totally overlooked the part about the cables. I have no idea which PSUs have longer cables.

I am guessing your real question was about what PSU's will actually make it in the P180 because of cable length. So far the only ones I have seen that have a real problem are the OCZ Mod Streams, they just don't have a long enough 24 pin cable, and I really wouldn't recommend an extention.

I JUST built a P180 system yesterday with an Enermax Liberty 500w.

Fits perfectly and with minimul clutter. Sexy PSU too - comes with a carrying case for all the extra cables.

Enermax liberty, Antec NeoHE, Seasonic s12.

The s12 has shorter cables than optimum, but just long enough. The Neo HE would be my PSU of choice if it weren't for the reliability issues.

DON'T buy the Phantom 500w and the Hiper Type R Modular 580W unless you plan on changing the fan in the hard drive/PSU tunnel and putting a 25mm thick one...

Any PSU will work actually, you can get whatever you want. Just buy some extension cables. I got my OCZ Modstream to work perfect with extensions, search the forums... you can find pics of it.

I have a 520w powerstream in mine and it fits perfect. The molex connectors are a tight fit if you put your drives at the top, but they will reach. Also, the bottom fan has to be taken out to accomodate for the longer length of the powerstream, but mine runs just fine without it.

I put a 25mm yate loon in the bottom chamber w/my powerstream. Snug, but it fits.

512MB of ram? I guess this means you're going to run linux.

PC P&C 510 SLI worked fine for me. Routing the power cables between the two chambers is a pain regardless of what you end up with.

I use the OCZ 520w ModStream with mine p180 along with a Abit IC7-G Motherboard and all cables reach where they need to without too many problems.

Why do I keep hearing about reliability problems with the HE's? I have one that runs perfefctly. The only problems I have heard about them is for one particular MoBo, so there isn't anything WRONG with them, they just have problems with one type of Asus mobo I think.

It reaches fine w/my DFI expert. Only problem is the size with the psu chamber fan. 38mm it comes with absolutely will not fit. I replaced it with the YL, and all is well. Snug, but well.
