p31/p35 limits

hi,

anyone knows the fsb limits for the p3x chipset...? planning on getting a quad and would like to know if i gotta get a new board, if so i'll just go i7 then.

the FSB limits are really board and chip dependent. Best read some reviews for each board you fancy buying.

on a good P35 mobo you will get middle to high 400s fsb assuming that your other components are also capable.
On a P31 I don't know/

Many P35 motherboards are good for over 500 FSB if you get a quality one. My old MSI P35 Neo3-FR was good to ~550 FSB but I didn't have the ram to try higher so i'm not sure if I was ram or mobo limited. I ran it 24/7 stable at 500 FSB.

I have a DFI LP P35 DK T2RS and it has been the best mobo it's ever been my pleasure to work with. Highly recommend it. Currently handling 400fsb fine, CPU and RAM can't go any higher.

That ram? If so, that may be seriously holding you back! You need to get some decent ram on that mobo and let it RIP! The P35 chipset can fly if you stock it with proper quality components.

Currently my CPU is at 100% OC and due to temps and an apparent FSB wall, even if I got some faster RAM I don't think I'd be able to get much more out of it with acceptable vcore.

When I up to a new chip, possibly a Q9550, I'll be getting some nice low lat 2x2GB DDR2 1066 or above.

I probably won't be upgrading the motherboard or anything else than the above for awhile. All this machine needs to do is play SC2 at max settings and with that new proc and RAM I'm very confident it can.

ok thanks for the insight guys may look to invest in some 1066 ram soon.... also i was planning on getting one of those q8200 chips is it worth it ?

with a dual though?
Most are good for 500+ with a dual but maybe only ~480 with a quad.

I had my P35 up at 500 FSB with a quad so it's not a chipset limitation. The main issue is that many quad chips themselves cannot handle 500 fsb. Also, when running a quad core, the motherboard will likely have problems providing the needed power to the board and CPU at such a demanding frequency. This is a limitation of the board itself, and not a character of the P35 chipset.
