Problem: CPU host clock reverting to original settings every time to 266 (266x9 for q6600)

Things that I have tried: Intel speedstep technology disabled, EIT disabled, running everything at stock. Giving 1.275 volt to CPU. memory @ 5-5-5-15 @ 2.03v /4-4-4-12. SPD x3.0 (2:3). Cleared CMOS dozen times. Taken battery out more than 10 minutes. Nothing helps.

HELP!!

Can you give the model of your RAM please.

If it is the Patriot Cas 4 (probably one of these modules) then you should have the memory at 2.2v. So you need change the DDR2 voltage on the MIT to +0.4.

Either way change the timings to 6-6-6-24. Change the memory multiplier to x2. This way your memory will be underclocked below JEDEC spec so that you know that any overclock will not be held back by a problem with memory.

Change the performance enhance to standard.

Make sure PCIE speed is set manually to 100MHz.

Then try a small overclock to say 275x9 to begin with and tell me if that saves via the F10 save option.


(It might be good to reset your BIOS to factory default state before trying this so that we know exactly what your settings are.)

If the method above does not work then I would like to to do two things.
1) Download the new F11 BIOS from gigabyte and install via DOS or QFlash (QFLASH operates from within the BIOS). Do not update via Windows.
2) Run memtest on the DDR2 on test #5 for 30 minutes. When you are doing this have the memory set at 5-5-5-15 1.8v 800MHz

Please report back and let us know how it is going. I am off to work now and doing a long shift (I'm a Social Worker) but will try and keep an eye on this thread if at all possible.

Looking at another thread from four days ago you said that Memtest and Prime95 test had both failed and that you were having boot problems. Is the computer stable / booting normally now at default cpu speeds and JEDEC spec DDR2 and have all the Memtest / Prime95 tests been passed successfully?

I changed memory to G. Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ. On patriot i did some overvolting, it was not going over FSB = 270. Patriot even did NOT run @ 4-4-4-12 stock settings (volt, timing etc) at CPU stock speed, I have no idea why.
Since I swtiched to Gskill its been better. Also by moving to f11 bios made some improvement. It is a strange experience for me when installed my memory (gskill) (had some initial boot failure). After Bios picked up auto settings so I could get in bios to alter settings. I gave stock setting to gskills of 2.0v 4-4-4-12, fsb=266, spd x2 (2:3) with these settings i got lot of boot failure and unstability. I decided to underclock (fsb=240) and go upwards keep timings of 4-4-4-12. My system did not like these timings and still gave boot failure. I tighten timings of 4-4-3-{9-11} it worked! Progress was slow increament of only 1 mhz of FSB. Currently I am at 295 with timings of 4-4-4-{11-12} with <2.1V.

While I overclock or testing for timings I set these options/values, I set speedstep, EIST and all those disabled. SPD kept x3, Cpu multiplyer at 9. DRAM advance timings @ auto. Volt for DRAM moved from 2.0 to 2.1 MAX. CPU volt constant of 1.275V. PCIE freq is kept constant 100MHz. Performance enhance is standard.

This is a good board. Memory stuff is crazy for me now. Cannot understand computer behavior.

When you are overclocking the CPU you should not have the memory multiplier at x3 but drop it to x2 and have the timings at 6-6-6-24. This would give you a DDR2 590 when you are running the 295x9 on the CPU. You will find it a lot easier to find the right overclock for CPU by underclocking the memory. Right now on your current settings if you get a boot failure or prime95 error you would not know if it is due to memory overclocked (295 x3 = DDR 885) or the CPU which is why you should always underclock the memory when overclocking the CPU. Once you have found a nice and stable overclock for the CPU you can then get to work on tightening timings and overclocking the memory while running the CPU at or below stock speeds.

On the BIOS front, the F8 & F9 BIOS revisions had some minor problems, one of them being memtest errors. So your Patriot may not have been faulty. F11 Bios fixed all bugs for me and I have no problems.

Its completely stable now. I posted this topic when had issues in the beginnning for @ stock settings. Though I did not check the stock settings @ 266 FSB @ 4-4-4-12. Although cuurently FSB=295x9 memtest stable with timming 4-4-4-12 <2.1v

By the way what is volt limit on DDR (if factory settings state: 2.0-2.1v) its micro D9 Gskill? Can it go till 2.2 without damaging ICs?

You've probably got the D9GMH (B6-3) or less likely but possible D9GCT (B6-37E) both of which are 6-layer PCB. They should both easily be safe at 2.2 or 2.3 but please watch the heat. The Microns can fail not because of the extra voltage but due to the extra heat created. I have a fan positioned on an arm that is blowing across my RAM for extra cooling.

i will not go above 2.096 (shown at PC health). Any recommended active ram coolers. In Closed case the active ram coolers will give hot air coming from CPU exhaust. any solutions. I like hr-07 high riser by thermalright, or corsair dominator will it do the job?? or like you said just blowing air.

If a fan any brackets available in the market that can mount close to rams?? thanks Cozumel

Currently I'm using the Antec SpotCool
I've also used the Zalman FB123 but an older version than I have linked.
The CoolIt RAM fan would also do the job.
And of course, the Corsiar Dominator or Thermalright solutions that you have already mentioned will cool things too.

I haven't checked the review on this but I reckon that Thermalright is probably the best of the lot as they always seem to make excellent products that offer the highest performance and cooling. The HR-07 would though invalidate the warranty on the memory as you need to remove the original heatspreaders,

I like these gskills high potential go up, just checkin how high it can go. Currently runnin 376 @ 2.14 V. I will be keeping the volt fixed until i dont get some fans over them. CPU multi x7. spd x3. 5-5-5-15. There is more room to go up.

I have this:
OCZ XTC Memory Cooler

It works wonders. 2x 60mm fans blowing down on your memory. It is also very quiet. It surprised me a good deal.

I'm able to do this:
4GB (2x2GB) G.SKILL DDR2-800 PQ @ 4:5 @ DDR2-1000 @ 5-5-5-15 @ 2.0V (still testing).

Another story: I bought these gskills (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ) few days ago from NCIX. I made sure the sticker on the box as well as on the ram stated, F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ. While testing I just glanced on "Memory Slot Selection" of CPU-z and found out that I am not running this model. The model is F2-6400PHU1-1GBHZ ....should be PHU2 not PHU1, Different. I did got these Ram for cheap for 120 and everywhere MOSTly it goes for 170. Now i know why i got them cheap. Well i am going to replace. them Thats why maybe timings of 4-4-4-12 were given up too soon from these modules.

As far as I am aware both U2 and U1 official GSkill specs are 4-4-4-12 2.0-2.1v. In fact, I don't believe that GSkill make a 2GB kit that is U1. It may be that CPU-Z is giving false information.

yes I could not find anywhere U1 2gb kit. I don't know. I deal with RAM later. I first I need an answer. OK cozumel or anybody with experience in OC. I got so far 390 FSB with timings 5-5-5-15 volt 2.14. CPU mulitplyer 7 (this was when I was checking for max mem clock). ANYWAZ this is not my question.
OK now i try to run stock settings. Just to see if my system takes it. here are the detail settings. (SLAP me if I did anything wrong)

I have boot failure to run FSB 266, sometimes it runs and sometimes it does NOT (by running means passing bios getting into windows). I was running with stock (266) fine until i changed FSb to 270 or 268. Sometimes underclocking gives problems (like boot failure) and sometimes it does not. I don't know what the heck is going on. I did not overvolt my new gskill. 99.99% i was having boot failure. Once the timings runs at certain FSB and gets away from POST screen to windows everything is fine then. I barley get stability issues then. I was getting Prime error when I got memory to 400. Stretched ram up to FSB of 390, in jumps of 1-3 mhz. It was very slow process accompanied by gazillion boot failure. The point is MOBO has no problems taking fsb but its these frequent boot failures that should not happen when run stock or when when i change FSB. Becasue i know 4-4-4-12 timing can take up to 280 (FSB). Also read my previous post.

I DID NOT TEST STOCK settings I was just testing to go up. Other than that Even while i was going up i had million boot failure. Even if a setting was once stable and i moved on and later i get back to it again it gives me boot failure. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. Just like I get back to STOCK settings everything is getting screwd. Its like it takes me back to ground zero...start from scratch by underclocking this is insane. Give me an answer.....
