How well does this chip overclock.. some say its the "new 300a" (for you veteran overclockers!) and how much should i expect to pay for a used one...

my current system is xp 1800+ with 512 pc2700 on an ecs k7vta3 v3.1 ... which mb should i get for my intel conversion.. intel on intel is the most stable, or so i've heard...

thanks

Intel in Intel is most stable. But expect no OC'ing ability whats-so-evAr.

Give it a shot on either Abit, Asus, or Gigabyte... in that order

Take a look at my system!!!! I like epox but I would tell you to go the i845pe route...I think they have a little bit better memory controller and some of the do quite well...Now if you want cheaper (like used) then the epox 4g4a is a very nice board....

I do 171fsb perfectly stable and I should be finding out here shortly if it can do 180-185fsb with a new 2.4b c1 to come...

no-no-no... Don't flood his mind with other motherboard manufactures other than the ones I listed

Epox does make some nice boards. I used a couple of them for clients computers that I built. But they don't really fit my needs for personal use.

The 1.6As are better than the 300As in that many, if not most with a little work, can do more than a 50% oc. Mine was oc'ed a Ghz (2624) for example, and some people are on 2.8-2.9 :Q
Of course now my 1.8 is getting close to the 1Ghz oc too, with a little work I'll make it

Get an Asus board based on an Intel chipset, many people here will recommend them. Intel chipsets not only are the most stable but SIS (won't even think of Via) have problems getting above 150 fsb plus only the Intel-based boards have agp/pci lock.

I'd go EPoX 4PEA+. Asus boards are also good but have odd quirks like cas settings going to slowest values when overclocked, USB ports not working etc.

best chipset with ddr and p4 is granite bay, but i think those boards are waaaaay too overpriced. IMO the best board is the Abit it7 max2 v2 which is the 845pe chipset

I have a 1.6A running at 2.4, but I think it's because I use a SIS chipset and it does crap out at anything over 150 for some reason...

I dunno about the 1.6a's although I've heard a lot of ppl that have been able to get them up to 2.2+.

My experience is limited to the 400mhz fsb 1.5ghz Williamette core that I was using temporarily in my mobo till i got a new processor.
With NO difficulty, I set the fsb to 133 and it booted right up at 2 ghz. At stock voltage! I felt like there was plenty of headroom left aswell, but I didn't have much time to play with it. I figured a 25% overclock was plenty. I'm sure the newer 1.6's will overclock quite well.

Any 845PE board will do you fine.

Well look at my signature. Going over to the cpudatabase, I have the best OC of the old williamate core over there. I would think Abit boards is the best reason for that.
