P965 & Penryn

Hello, I have a GA-965P-DS3 revision 3.3 (FSB1333 ready) and I wonder if my motherboard will be compatible with the new 45nm CPUs from Intel, Wolfdale & Yorkfield.

Anyone knows if they will be compatible with a BIOS update?

It's up in the air at this time regarding official support, but we did have Penryn running on an Asus P965 board earlier this month. We should know more from Gigabyte and others in the next two weeks.

What ever became of this? I have a GA-965P-DS3 (rev 3.3). When the new Intel 45nm processors come out, I'd like to get one. Naturally, if I can avoid buying a new motherboard, I will.

Actually, if anyone here knows the answer, it would be quicker. Gigabyte says they aren't answering email until after January 8. I guess they are on vacation or something.

im wondering the same thing, i have the 965 rev. 3.3 Anandtech said they would do further testing to conclude if the board holds e8400 compatibility or not.

Eh? They are officially released and that's not a restriction Asus has a problem with seeing as they've had a compatibility listing up for months...

Sounds like you talked to the wrong guy or Gigabyte are just the wrong company.....

Question : I have compatibility issues with 4 pci cards... 1. an ieee1394 firewire card, 2. wifi card 3. lan card 4. pci ide controller card. All 4 of these devices show an error code 10 (device cannot start) in device manager. I think Support Center is not the way we will find out if it is or not compatible (even if they answer not).

We will have to wait more (1 or 2 weeks in my opinion).

Anyway I am not buying a new motherboard, and Kentsfield look the same compared to Yorkfield in the benchmarks (although most applications still doesn't squeeze quad core at all).

A Q6600/Q6700 could be a great buy at the time low end Yorkfields enters in the market because its price will decrease.

Let's hope these CPUs will be in stock when Yorkfield appears in its whole range.

I wish I still had my Commando it would be great if P965 did support 45nm, not holding my breath though.

there are about 20 965 boards that support 45nm, but they dont come from gigabtye. mostly msi & asus.

I thought you said Gigabyte told you it wouldn't work?

Maybe you should buy an E8400 and be the beta-pioneer?
At the worst, you'll have to buy another MB that does support 45nm and sell the p965 on.

im in the process of trying (NOT SAFE -POSSIBLE RISK) and some people are trying it too. I'm waiting for xtremesystems hacked bios as they say.

got word from a german gigabtye official forum that they would be beta bioses for the 965p ds3 3.3 only with support for wolfdale. I havent been able to find the download link yet, and due to frustration i already sold my 965p in the FS forums. I picked up the ip35e for 60 bucks. But if you're patient, you may see a beta bios soon. I googled and found the forum in german.

Yes, new BIOS for P965 GA motherboards are coming soon and they support 45nm CPUs.

bassically to support new Wolfdale need newer P35 or X38 chipset some company make a bios let it work as backward speed that gigabyte board will not do .

Question : Will this motherboard support the upcoming Peryn and Wolfdale CPU by Intel. It seems that support for it was dropped a wile ago. Is pretty lame since it was a pretty expensive part to begin with and now i can't upgrade my CPU. Seems that some of the Asus motherboads will support it, is weird that gigabyte will not do the same.


P.S. The US site does not show the beta bios, is it safe to use the german ones? Anyone.
