Dude, my bill for last month was $30. I made zero toll calls... just base fees.

I might end up ditching the landline and going with a cellular program.

i signed up on them under this special program called LifeLine or something like that, which is for low income (under 18k a year) families (you can also say you make under 18k a year, hehe)(its pretty good for college students that are low on cash and living independently). Get this, they only charge like 4-7 bucks A MONTH!

universal lifeline. However, if they find out that you're actually making more money than that, they'd charge you the difference!

I had lifeline but they made me go to the standard rate once I got dsl through them. Is there any way I can get the lifeline price back and still have dsl frome someone?

Pacbell did the same thing to me, they cancelled my Universal Lifeline when I got DSL last June....basically they say....if you can afford to pay DSL, you can afford to pay a regular phone fee.

I have DSL installed since last Oct, but I'm still using universal lifeline. It may be because the DSL company is Covad, not Pacbell.

However, I don't think there is any reasonable Pacbell can cancel the universal lifeline service. Universal lifeline is a requirement from the government for low income people, not a promotion for Pacbell. As long as you fulfill the income requirement and one line per household, they must give the discount to you, no matter you have DSL or not.

those were my thoughts, lifeline isnt a damn special offer, its not the low-incomes fam that wish to be updated in technology in getting dsl. I'm under lifeline cause im a damn college student living oh my own, i'm sure as hell i meet the requirements for lifeline, if they even think about canceling it cause i ordered dsl then mannnnnnnnnnn are they gonna get a phone call from me......

Unsickle: it all depends on your annual income. I think its like under 18k or something, its in the teens, so go file your taxes and find out.

On the pacbell web site, it says that for lifeline, your line needs to be the only line or something like that. I think they consider dsl a second line.

Yup, they sure do. I was told the same thing, "if you can afford DSL, you can afford a regular line." SUCKS!

If you have a room in a house, they will not let you get the Universal lifeline plan...thats what happened at Berkeley....

Also, I'm not sure if this was mentioned before...if you get Universal lifeline, chances are they wont check...but you cannot get DSL or any additonal add on features (caller ID, an extra phone line..etc)...they will cancel your Universal lifeline subscription.

but still...after all the pennies saved by using Universal lifeline, all I have to say is this...

PAC BELL, GO TO HELL, PAC BELL, GO TO HELL....

Ok, I pay about 17 dollars per month for pac bell. We make all local calls and our bills are always like 30. We called them and they said we must use three way calling or something. Bullpoop!!!

P.S. I would really like to know how you college students make 18k+, I have trouble just passing my classes

Have you checked the charges from your long distance carrier? They usually tack it on like MAD...try getting rid of the long distance carrier (can usually save you at least $5-$10 off the bill, and if you need to make long distance calls, use one of those 10-10 whatever numbers.

In response to one of the earlier posts. You can get lifeline (without DSL) if you rent one room in a house. When I had it, I rented a room in a large home with 11 rooms. Everyone had their own line. There were dammels all over the place. All I had to say was that I did not have access to any of the other phones (I really didn't) and that I make less than 18K I didn't have to purchace any of the other BS services and my long distance carrier charged less than a dollar in taxes per month. I dont remember the total, but it was something like $8 bucks a month. SO, for those that fit these requirements, go switch the service and save money!

I agree. We used to have three different phone lines in a big townhouse with two other people and I was still able to get the lifeline thing. As long as you have only one phone line under your name, and you meet the low income requirement, then you're eligible.
