Ok, so can this be done realisticly? I have heard there is great risk in pulling a monitor apart. How else can it be painted so as not to plug all the vent holes with paint.

I know I should just go buy a new flat screen but just humor me on this one..

Monitor is a 21 inch hitachi I got from here in the hot deals forum about 6 years ago.

Any tips on how to do this and have it not turn out like crap.

is it the hitachi superscan elite 802?
if so, please get rid of it.
that's an ancient shadowmask fishbowl. it's probably dim as hell with that obstrusive shadow mask.

Just do what 0roo0roo said. There's no massive risk providing you're being careful and that you're not taking the lazy way out and spraying it while the case is on.

So where is the risk at? Where does the charge come from. touching a particular thing inside?

btw there should be a metal case shielding inside anyways, so i think you'd be pretty dandy just painting the shell without taking it apart. I was thinking that the paint vapors might get in, but then again, if paint vapors get in, dust would also, and you know dust doesn't do anything to the picture.

you make a mess, and do a poor job. possibly getting some on the screen. masking tape is imperfect for such jobs.
less worry just to have it removed.
and plus if you want super quality you should actually sand with a fine grit paper between paint coat applications as well as primer. and of course the coats should be thin.
plus i don't know how you'd deal with vents with the case on, leaving the vents masked would leave them a different color!
you don't even have to go with automotive shine for a finish these days, there are tons of weird finishes in spray paint now. you could paint it to look like faux rock for instance lol
