Painting cd-rom faces

I was wondering what the best way to go about removing a face plate from a cd rom drive is to paint it or should i just leave it on and do it on the drive directly?

any advice / links would be greatly apprecated.

you really shouldn't leave it on, that's kind of risky. on most drives the front bezels are held on with little tabs on the side. start by ejecting the tray and taking off the front of the tray.....you have to take this off first, try squeezing it and lifting up or looking for tabs. then you can take off the bigger face plate, try to push all of the tabs in at the same time with something small like a flat-head. make sure to take the clear plastic parts off where the light shines through at, don't want to paint over that.

I was wondering the same thing last night.

So i grabbed a screw driver and took my spare cd rom, and completely removed the cover and the tray. you can also pop off the the plastic button and remember to cover the led cover.

It really isn't very hard to remove the face plates, just use common sense and take your time. To cover the LED lens, I take a toothpick and smear the lens with grease, on both sides. The paint doesn't stick to it, and it's much easier than trying to mask it with tape. Just make sure the paint is completely dry before trying to wipe it off... ;-)
