Conservative Principles + Innovation = CRITICAL ERROR!!!

I don't care what fucking principles this country was founded on (constitution aside)... we're not living in the 17/1800's and its time for us to move ahead.

He was probably referring to her jingoistic, fear mongering, right wing populism. Just a guess.

....they'd all want more federal earmarks.
Text

Likewise, she will have to own up to seeking and receiving federal earmarks while she was Mayor of Wasilla and hiring a big time lobbyist to help. In addition, both capital budgets she has presided over are chalk full of earmarks, many not for things one would think government ought spend money for. Alaska has an "earmarks" budget such as no other state has ever even dreamed of.

I don't recall any fear mongering coming from Palin during the campaign. Perhaps you can show me an example.

I do remember a TON of fear mongering from the left though. Thank god Obama won, I can't imagine how many riots we would have had if he lost.

I called (202) 747-1812 and got their machine. The message said, "If you are a reporter leave your number and we'll get back to you."

!

She didn't repeat that Obama was "palling around with terrorists" hundreds of times because she thought it would make people feel sunny. She was playing on their fears and the ignorant perception of him as a "secret muslim" or whatever.

Your turn. Please point out examples of Obama or Biden's fear mongering, not "the left." Not including Biden's fear mongering about the "tests" Obama would be subject to should he win. Doh.

What Republicans need is someone that can appear as stupid as Palin actually is so that he/she can excite their base, but in private with advisers and Congress, etc, prove to be an intelligent, insightful person.

Were you paying attention? Watching TV? She said that Obama's bigger government plans were the same as in countries where the people weren't free. (Translation: Obama will enslave you with the government) Is that not fear mongering to you? She also constantly called Obama a socialist (showing either that she was ignorant of what the term socialist means, or that she was using a charged term to smear her opponent). Evoking the specter of communism, etc isn't fear mongering to you? If it's not, you aren't paying attention.

Of course you remember a ton of fear mongering from the left, because that's what you're attuned to look for. Basically Obama and Biden were saying that McCain was a warmonger, and McCain and Palin were saying that Obama was a dirty terrorist loving communist.

Thanks for your concern for the country and possible riots though, I'm sure it's heartfelt.

Its been fifty years now that politics have centered around how easy it is to sell the politician over their actual abilities and accomplishments.

That being said, I think she has a better shot than Obama in 2012 right now. Given the state of the economy and the almost certainty that things will get much worse over the next couple years, the incumbent will have a difficult time. McCain led Obama right up until the stock market took its nosedive, because McCain was seem as the "incumbent" by party affiliation.

Obama does have the ability to pee on people and tell them its raining, but after four years of a terrible economy it shouldn't take too much of a competitor to beat him. I think he is in an unenviable position where he can do a good job and people will say he sucked. He can do an amazing job and that may not even be enough for him to turn around the wreck we have for an economy. Poor timing for him, which translates into great timing for whoever the Republicans offer up in 2012.

Four years is a long time, and you never know what Obama will get done. Not to mention the the airing of the dirty laundry of the Bush years may also have an impact.

Do you really consider this fear mongering? Both sides do this basically every time they attack the stance of their opponent. Liberals consider it fear mongering from republicans and truth from the democrats. Republicans view it reversed. She and McCain may have done more than Obama, but they both did it. I'm unaware of a politician that doesn't. If fear wasn't such a powerful tool, they wouldn't talk about their opponents, they'd be content to just talk about what they will do.

Not at all, I didn't vote for him as governor here in Texas. I certainly didn't vote for him for President either time.

Bush's dirty laundry has already been aired out but nobody on the Democratic side had the balls to do anything about it. Obama has been vague (big surprise) but has seemed to indicate that his desire is to just move forward instead of going after the Bush Administration.

I'm not too pleased with Obama's ideas for fixing the economy so far, but he does have a crew that seems to be committed to doing something. I think they will tinker with their plans until things get better. Unfortunately, I think the only way the economy will get better is if we start to let home values fall back into the historical range of 3X annual household income. Then we have to work on producing tangible goods, this consumption based economy relies on us borrowing money from other countries, which is doomed to fail eventually. For the first time ever, we are now borrowing more than the interest on the national debt. Where I come from, if you are having to borrow money to make minimum (interest only) payments, you are pretty much screwed. I think the same applies to large countries. Taxes are at historical low levels (18% of GDP), yet debt is at historical high levels (over 80% now?). This imbalance cannot last. Obama needs to stick to his campaign ideas of slashing government spending and/or increasing taxes.

I don't know what good things Obama will do, but with the coming Alt A defaults and all the announced layoffs actually happening, things will get worse. Until those larger core problems get resolved then we will continue to struggle. Unlike the majority of the Bush years, where he could put everything on the national credit card and inflated housing bubble (responsible for nearly any real growth the past 5 years) and make believe that we were doing well; if Obama tries that same tact, and it appears thats what he is doing right now, then things won't collapse but we will be mired in a much worse state. Obama has to let things fall apart so they can be rebuilt properly this time. It will be a tough process but the country will be better for it. What that does is make him a punching bag because he will be seen as responsible for not getting us out of the recession, which is what the 2012 candidate will run on, and likely win on.

That is true, I should have been more clear. After Palin was announced McCain took his first real lead which kept growing to his largest lead of the entire campaign a month later. Then it dropped as the market and economy dropped. Since the economy became the number one issue, its hard to believe those two events weren't closely tied together.

The point is that Palin gave McCain the boost he needed to beat Obama, a boost he was unable to muster on his own.

I have only voted Republican once in my life, for RR Commissioner here in Texas. That was only because he had four seats at the UT basketball games, 2nd row center court where the players checked in. He used those seats once in three years. Since they were always empty, I sat there all the time. I had my free student ticket, I would pay $6 for nosebleeds and bring people and have them sit right there on top of the action. Everyone always owed me "big" for getting those good seats for them. Other than that I have voted Democrat, Libertarian, write in or skipped that section of the ballot. I'm no Republican shill.

That being said, I can see that she had a tremendous positive effect on the McCain's campaign up until the stock market crashed which was also near the time she started giving interviews. If you think people voted for Obama because they were worried about the intelligence of the VP on the opposing ticket, then that is a huge insult to Obama. Given that the economy was the top issue for most voters, its also naive to think that the voters forgot about their most important issue and instead voted *against* McCain because of Palin as opposed to voting *for* Obama.

She is a pretty good politician, she gets her base energized and carries loyal support. Her lack of knowledge of national politics and world politics is certainly scary, but that is nothing she can't learn in three years. At that point, she could speak just as confident and clearly on talking points as Bush had. Throw in her natural charm and a horrible economy for an incumbent Obama and she stands a great chance.

I wouldn't disagree with someone who says she doesn't deserve to be President or that she would be terrible as President. I'm just saying that she has a good shot (as good as anyone four years out) of being elected. To let your anger of her blind you from seeing she is a realistic threat to winning office does little good.

Yes I consider it fear mongering, yes McCain/Palin did it to a significantly higher degree (almost their exclusive form of campaigning over the last month and a half or so) and no, I don't think the fact that it is bipartisan changes the definition of what it is in any way.

HendrixFan seems to totally ignore the best equivalent example in American history by saying, "Obama does have the ability to pee on people and tell them its raining, but after four years of a terrible economy it shouldn't take too much of a competitor to beat him. I think its time to cite FDR, who held a total grip on the Presidency until his death in 4/1945, even though he failed to totally fix the economy Hoover left him. And a legacy of a democratic house majority that was not broken until 1994, and also Democratic Senate majorities for most of those 62 years. And given the total failure of the GOP under GWB&co, one has to wonder how long it will be before the American public ever trusts the GOP to have a single right answer when the GOP still fail to learn their lessons.

No, McCain got a boost because of the convention. Candidates always get a boost post-convention. Obama didn't (nor did he need it) because of the prolonged primary race. My guess is that people were sick of hearing about Obama vs. Hillary for so long.
