Nice, may be a nice upgrade from my 755p if the price isn't too astronomical

I wanted Palm to have a good device to show and they didn't disappoint. With this device, I hope that they will recover the market share that they had and give the market the competition it needs.

I doubt they'll let you upgrade to this device and keep a SERO plan. I believe there were other devices that kicked you off of SERO as well. This is pure speculation on my part, so I hope you do get to keep your $30 plan, with unlimited data & txt...thats how much it SHOULD cost dammit!

I'm not on the $30 but on a sero plan, they better not require a brand new plan, that would be enough for me to switch to a different carrier.

I believe right now if you want the Samsung Instinct you are required to move to teh $70/month minimum plan. I don't have all the details, I don't have Sprint or SERO, just saying, they won't let the hottest hotness out for cheap (like AT&T and the iPhone..$70/month minimum)

Trying to regain a foothold in the market and launching on Sprint does not mix. WTF were they thinking?

I think this thing looks good enough to revitalize BOTH palm and sprint. I'm an avid blackberry user and i'm going to switch. It blows the Bold and Storm away while making the iphone look dated.

im betting anything that the pre will be on the new sero plans ($60, $80, $100) and wont be "compatible" with the old sero plans.

luckily my touch pro is safe and sound on the $30 sero plan.

Well, I will reserve judgment on whether or not it makes the iPhone seem dated until I play with it, but Palm does have a chance here to seize some significant market share. That being said, I am not nearly as sure that it will have the ability to bring thousands of new subscribers to Sprint's network, especially as a lot of people have already jumped ship to ATT for the iPhone (and as cool as the Pre is, I doubt many are willing to swallow the early termination fee) and those that have not are already on Sprint or VZW. In addition, it will be crucial for Palm to get this to market asap, as the longer they drag it out (and closer to the summer), the higher the chance that Apple will reveal iPhone 3G version 2.

In the end, it does indeed look like a sweet phone, but I am not convinced that releasing it on Sprint was the best idea....guess we will see!

EDIT:

From the Techcrunch hands-on:
It?s straight up gorgeous, but it?s not perfect - yet. During our demonstration, a few things went on the fritz: there was a bit of lag, certain menus wouldn?t open no matter how many times they were poked. With Palm only promising ?by the end of the first half of 2009?, they?ve still got nearly a full 6 months to crack out the bugs, so we won?t judge them too much.

hmm, so like 6 months at the earliest most likely.

I've got an iPhone but I absolutely LOATHE the AT&T service, and ironically, loved Sprint. I was on the $30 SERO w/ employee discount prior to getting the iPhone in Sept 07, so the extra $35/month for service kind of sucks too.

Now that I've migrated my calendar to Google Calendar vs iCal, and use Google Contacts vs Address Book I no longer need 100% mac compatibility. There are a few things I don't like such as the lack of onscreen keyboard (how are you supposed to type in landscape, like when browsing?), and I'll hold off making a judgment until I play with one, but this does look promising.

Of course, by this summer there should be a new iPhone revision out so I'll probably compare those 2 side-by-side to determine the winner. The CMDA of the Pre already puts it ahead. Especially since Sprint roams for free on Verizon!

It looks really nice. I like the new features of WebOS - particularly the window'ing capability. Wireless charging - pretty neat.

Another link to a discussion of it:

FWIW, I would think it would be really unlikely that they would let you use a phone that is likely to be very popular with a SERO plan. But stranger things have happened.

No, 6 months _at the latest_. Sprint and Palm are going to be in a serious hurry to get this thing out, as it'll probably save both their bottom lines for the year. Given the state of the software (surprisingly good!), I would lean more towards late Q1, early Q2.

Some of the features I really like:
1. Tethering support over BT!
2. A2DP
3. Facebook and Google integration
4. Gestures
5. Physical keyboard
6. Easy-to-use SDK with access to hardware

Things I'm less than thrilled about:
1. No removable storage support. Yeah, it's got 8gb internal, but there are some big microSDHC cards out there now.
2. Codec support seems awfully limited, especially given the "OMG SO POWERFUL" processor they put in there. I was hoping for WMA and WMV, really...
3. No video out. Expecting HDMI seems a bit much, perhaps, but I was hoping...

What I would like to know more about:
1. What's the scoop with the maps? Will we be able to navigate with turn-by-turn? Pics suggest yes, but there's no confirmation.
2. What's going on with the PC side of things regarding PIM and media sync?
3. Battery life?

This phone really appeals to the geek side of me The style-conscious side still prefers an iPhone or Blackberry Bold to this, but damn if the Pre's OS doesn't look amazing.

At it's announcement it was stated that yes, turn-by-turn will be available.

3. Battery life?

Probably not final yet, i.e like the iPhone when it was first shown to the press. Target life will probably be a day or two at least (can't really call yourself a mobile phone these days if your battery dies after a few hours).. and if it's really bad under heavy use.. hey replaceable battery

heh, my 6 months at the earliest was more of a jaded, cynical, guess based on how long it takes other companies like HTC and Sony to get their phones out.

When I saw the demo/specs, I was thinking "hey, it's a geeky iphone." I love it. I don't love the price speculation of $400, and the fact it's on sprint. Tho, on verizon, I'd be then tied to a $50/mo data plan i refuse to pay for, so i wouldn't be able to get the phone anywya.

I love everything I've seen about this phone. If this was GSM I'd be all over it. Too bad a GSM version won't be around till the end of the year.

whoa...just watched the entire presentation...this is definitely an iPhone killer contender. I will definitely be in line to get this.
