is this a good deal on a plasma? im finding a lot of these (this pana model) for less than 2k. which one is the really popular panasonic model?

Actually this Panasonic is one of the best imo and other opinions. Do a search on it. I find the image quality to be fantastic(from the right source). Now it is EDTV not HDTV but to tell you the truth in RC-willey it looked better then the 18k sony plasma sitting next to it. May have to pick one up myself.

Cheapest ive ever seen it for was $3200

Just keep this in mind when purchasing an EDTV.. If it doesnt do 480P, dont bother. If it does 480P. the picture quality is better then HDTV.

Awesome plasma, one of the absolute best choices of this kind of display for the money. I just got rid of mine a few days ago.

There are quite a few places with a lower price, but shipping is higher.

is this the same one? it appears theres a consumer version (with many goodies) and professional one. i might have to get one of these. heh heh.

only thing is that on some of the websites it says "standard plasma display" and some say EDTV.

I agree with Venomous. Most EDTV's i've seen, plasmawise, beat out hdtv plasmas. All Edtv's should do 480p. Also note the contrast ratio. This Panny KILLS the competition when it comes to black lvl performance (a.k.a. lord of the rings)...wonder if thats the display model instead of the retail model...only thing missing would be speakers and extra connections...but if your buying this you already have a home theater. Also note this model has very very few connections on back.

That's the one.

There currently is no consumer version of this quite yet. The TH-42PD25U/P is based on the 6UY panel. When the TH-42PD30U/P comes out in a few months, it should be based on this new 7UY panel.

The 7UY panel is 10% brighter, has some black level improvements, and a bunch of other upgrades.

The consumer version does have a bunch of other nice things (HDMI, built in HD tuner, CableCard, stand, speakers, inhome warranty, etc), but it's more expensive, has a huge bezel, and cannot take 720p through any input except for the PC input. Pluses and minuses.

Any good sources for a matching stand? This is very tempting, but I'd need a stand (little holder for on top of my existing TV stand, not something with shelves).

Depends on what kind of stand you like. The best place (strangely enough) is ebay.

This is the standard stand that most people get:

This stand is no longer in production, but I like it a LOT more. It's similar to the consumer model, and has a narrower neck, plus a triangular base:

$2029 is a lot of money for a tv just to watch reruns of Seinfeld on tv. Why not just get a rear-projection tv for a lot less $$$$$?

Rear projection sets look like sh$t.....and take up WAY too much space.

Anyways, this is a great TV. I paid $2k for it about a month ago and it's great. I had a Samsung plasma before that and it sucked. The Panasonic is a great TV and don't be a snob and think that EDTV is crap compared to HDTV, experience it yourself on a quality EDTV and it may change your mind.

This article is over a year old and much of their "there isn't much HDTV source available" argument goes in the toilet. 80% of the TV I watch is in HDTV. It still looks great on my EDTV Plasma, but I wouldn't say that one should NOT got a HDTV plasma. But for almost 1/2 the price I think EDTV is a better bargain and since I sit 8 feet from my Plasma I can't see the difference between EDTV and HDTV ( I compared for hours at the two side by side in stores).

What do you mean rear projections look like sh$t? Have you seen the latest DLP sets from Samsung or Mitsubishi? My 62" DLP set is only 20" deep and sits very tightly into a corner, so I don't get the space issue either.
Perhaps you need to get a clue about displays.

EDTV is great at 480p

did any of you read that article the other day about UHDTV? it was like 13K or 15k lines of resolution.. they said about half the people who viewed it got queasy.. it was too real for them.

Technology is grand.. I hope it cures all the major diseases.. cause I really want to be here 70 years from now!!! "i'm 37"
