Since the other thread was more focused on the passing of Pope Francis, I thought there should be one on the new Pope. While the Conclave will soon take place to elect the next Pope, I found an interesting video that lists every Pope, from St. Peter to Pope Francis:

There are many interesting tidbits in the video including the 14th Pope, from Africa, Saint Victor I. According to this site there have been three African Popes:

It will be interesting to see how long it takes and who will be elected continuing the 2,000 year history ever since Jesus declared, "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it".

I hope the new pope is gay and fucks an of-age and consenting young priest right there on live TV during his coronation - or whatever they call whatever hocus pocus religious bullshit happens at that sort of invocation.

Your anger and the unbounded way you so frequently express it is rapidly making you a pariah here. Multiple posters have complained multiple times. We allow a lot here, but you are a poster child for not allowing such "free expression." Consider this your one free warning to please reign yourself in, as you are otherwise a valuable and productive poster.

I'm honestly unsure of what is offensive about a gay pope. If that's offensive, you might be a bigot. If you can't handle some raunchy language on the internet for shits and giggles, you are probably a snowflake.

The Catholic church has oppressed and abused so many millions of people every century they have existed its insane. They have literally covered up an insane amount of child sexual abuse! But a raunchy joke is the issue. Oh yeah?

Pope Francis was actually progressive, and guess what the American Catholics and other conservative Catholic priests and bishops want to do - IS TAKE US BACKWARDS FROM THAT. I'm just staying in a non-traditional way - let's move forward instead.

And the most ardent American catholics are the most horrific bigoted, evil, nasty beings we have around. And those defending Trump's evil actions want to say this is offensive language? Hey let's defend disappearing people, destroying people's lives by illegally taking over federal agencies, destroying democracy, BUT IF YOU MAKE A GAY POPE JOKE THAT IS A STEP TOO FAR FOR US!

These are the worst people in the world and I can't say I'm upset if they are offended. In fact, I hope they are seething and getting high blood pressure from my post. And if we cater to their hypocritical sensitivities, we are fucking losing.

The problem with the Papacy is the same as the problem with Kings and Dictators, sometimes you get Good ones, sometimes you get Bad ones. I am all for having Good ones, but the Bad ones show us that in no way whatsoever is the organization representative of the Creator of the Universe. They just fancy themselves that and sometimes get it right.

My greatest fear is that they would elect a Fascist.

Pope Pius X was a fascist before fascism was even a thing. Steve Bannon and Pius would have been best buddies.

Today I learned the 26th Pope was Saint Felix the 1st per the video in the OP. He was probably conservative. 😉

Interesting that there have been African Popes, but also that they all date from well before the slave trade, and European colonialism, got going.

Makes me wonder about the history of racism, how it has clearly evolved and changed form over the centuries. I am sure racial prejudice has existed for millennia, but racism as we think of it now, I'm pretty sure is something much more recent.

Christianity took hold in Africa long before Europe.

The Romans disregard anyone who was not a citizen and did not speak Latin.

You were a barbarian and subject to enslavement for which Aristotle said suited them.

Yeah, I don't have great position for arguing that topic, as I know very little about the Romans. Seems it was a very alien culture.

But surely by the time of those African (possibly black?) Popes they'd embraced Christianity at an institutional level?

Also, as I understand it, the Romans gave the populations of the regions they conquered the option of becoming citizens, by serving in their military? Do wonder what would have happened if the US had done that with Afghanistan and Iraq.

History is my favorite subject, but this is a little hairy as many things are always up for debate. Once the Romans stopped killing Christians, embraced and decreed Catholicism as the sole belief of the empire, they may have tempered their stance in certain ways. North Africa was part of the empire and would have Roman citizens from which a Pope was chosen in early days. Nevertheless, being elected Pope of the very early Church marked you for death (martyrdom) before the conversion.

Congress would have had to pass a law allowing non-citizens not living in the US to join the military as a quick search shows that option is currently only available to non-citizens permanently residing in the US with work permission status, a high school diploma and able to speak and understand English.

The issue is that even Romans were "liberals" by the way of thinking with the Christians.
