i don't know how Paramount could have made this happen... I mean, all of their movies fare much better on BD than HD-DVD... who thinks there was some money transfers for this exclusivity?
there goes Transformers, and ID4 when it releases.

I hope something changes about this arrangement.

Microsoft and Toshiba must have paid a lot of cash for this given that blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2-to-1 and has been all year.

Universal is currently the only major HD-DVD only studio and they admit to being under pressure from their corporate parent to give up the exclusive payments and offer blu-ray.

Outstanding! Hopefully more studio's will follow their example.

It brings warm feelings to my heart that transformers will not being coming to Blue-Ray.

Wow. Transformers is a huge title for the home theatre market.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of PS3 owners suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

Can we take the HD DVD/Blu-Ray flame war back to the A/V Forum...where it belongs?

I'm still not buying a new player until we see a winner in this pissing contest. It just makes no sense to have competing standards.

I'm not budging until there is a relatively inexpensive dual format player available.

Those blue-ray people will still be able to watch the movies - on HD-DVD. I guess they will just have to get a new player....

Just wait, soon Walmart will be selling $150 HD-DVD players. It's bound to happen, once that goes through people will snap them up like crazy, and Sony can go back to losing money.

It isn't, but this is another area where HD-DVD has an advantage. Since HD-DVD players are region-free, even if something is exlusive to Blu-Ray in the states, you can usually import it from overseas, albeit at a greater cost.

It's good if you want that format to "win."

I asked in a previous thread why people want HD-DVD to win so badly considering that the two formats are very similar with the exception that Blu-Ray has higher capacity. I don't recall all of the answers I got... cost was one of them, although I think they'd both level off at the same cost after the early adopter phase. I think there was something about DRM and/or region coding too... and Sony hate of course.

I haven't been following this format war because I hate these things, but I am guessing that HD will win simply because Microsoft has so much money and power to shift the market a certain direction. The difference in sales between the 360 and PS3 alone will make a big difference here.

Sure, the thread can be moved, but honestly there is no real flaming going on in here. Everyone seems to be pretty open in this thread.

I too, would like to see how Paramount plans to pull this one off.

It would make a difference if all 360s included a hd-dvd drive. But its only an add on and I'm guessing less than 10% of all 360 owners bought one.

What I think is funny about this is it really highlights the "geek hate" shift. It used to be "cool" to hate Microsoft. Now its "cool" to hate Sony.

Xavier434, I think Sony has a lil bit of money too.

I don't see why a format has to win. Competition drives down prices and drives up innovation.

But it's an add-on that you can find on ebay for $150.00 and with a few minutes and some Googling, find drivers that'll get it working on your desktop/laptop as an HD-DVD player. Cheapest HD drive available right now.

I don't think Microsoft cares that much about HD-DVD, I mean it's a format created by Toshiba and Microsoft doesn't own it. They just have an add-on HD-DVD player for the 360 and sold a couple hundred thousand players.

Well it still is cool to hate Microsoft (Zune, Vista OS compared to apple products Ipod / os x). I just find the whole thing funny.

If that were true, then BD wouldn't be outselling HD-DVD like it is. People really aren't buying the HD-DVD add-on....largely because they don't want to sink in another $180 on their initial system purchase when there's no clear winner, thus no guarantee of future support/releases.
