Blu-Ray players need to drop in price before I'll buy one.

HD-DVD is tempting since their players are down around the $200 range now but I keep thinking that the moment I break down and buy one that it will go the way of the Betamax.

As of right now, you can get the A2 player + 3 movies (300, The Departed, Blood Diamond, etc) for $208 shipped from Amazon. Many movies are also buy two get one free. So you can get a player + 3 movies + 6 movies + 5 movies from the mail in promo for under $290 shipped.

With a deal like that I just might have to jump on it.

EDIT: Missed it

Thanks Paramount. For a second there, I was thinking the format war would end early.

Agreed.
HOORAY! People will not be able to watch the movies that they want and the kids will be sad.

yea really. why is exclusivity a good thing again?

It's good if you want that format to "win."

I asked in a previous thread why people want HD-DVD to win so badly considering that the two formats are very similar with the exception that Blu-Ray has higher capacity. I don't recall all of the answers I got... cost was one of them, although I think they'd both level off at the same cost after the early adopter phase. I think there was something about DRM and/or region coding too... and Sony hate of course.

Perhaps its the relative amount of influence the main companys heralding each camp is going to have in the future. I mean, would you rather have Sony running the HD market, or Toshiba-MS running it? Maybe its not just about the HD market either... which company would you rather see prosper? Yeah, I realize the format war is hurting us customers the most at the end. But we have no control over it other than boycotting the whole HD market, and otherwise you would eventually side with one. Some of us dont have an expandable budget to buy both players.

Brand prejudice (or loyalty, if extreme) generally isnt a good thing when it comes to purchasing decisions, but with most things being equal it can be a factor. If company A and B come up with similar products and I have an inclination of disliking company A's attitude and business practices (or moreso than company B's), then I would (righteously) go with company B.

What are you on dial up?

It's a 1.5mb cable connection. Under absolutely ideal circumstances and dedicating every single second of available bandwith I can pull down around 675 megs an hour. Again assuming absolutey perfect conditions and 100% available bandwith I'm looking at taking 11+ hours to grab an 8 gig file.

And you think that is a lot of time for an 8 gig file? I remember 196CPS. That would be characters per second.

Compared to the 10 minute drive that I have to Blockbuster? Yeh, 11 hours sounds a little excessive.

You either need to go to college or go back to college because HD movies are already being traded freely across high speeds lans. You sound like one of those people back in the 90's saying no one would ever download music because who wants to wait a day for something to download over dial up.

I was just pointing out that your sentence wasn't necessary, because he already said what they did to justify the high price.

DVD Forum approves 'bigger than Blu-ray' HD DVD
07 Sep 07
Country: China, USA
Source: Online Services/Intelligence/Video and DVD/Updates

The DVD Forum, the international DVD standards authority, has approved a 51 GB single-sided triple-layer HD DVD disc for production. Extension to the HD DVD standard, which was submitted by Toshiba in April, received approval on 31 August 2007. Other recent developments include:

* A single-sided triple-layer HD DVD/DVD hybrid (combi) disc, the DVD layer of which would be playable by legacy DVD players, is expected to be approved before the year end.
* The Forum has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China's Optical Memory National Engineering Research Centre (OMNERC) regarding licensing of the HD DVD-ROM China (formerly HD DVD-ROM China-only) format, specification for which was approved earlier this year. The only difference between the latter and the standard HD DVD format is the modulation scheme: the optical pickup in HD DVD China player will be able to play standard HD DVD discs, although Chinese discs will not be playable in standard HD DVD drives. According to the Forum, the Chinese government is keen to introduce the format domestically before the Olympic Games in August 2008. Large-scale integrates (LSIs) are already under development by manufacturers and use of AACS for the format is currently under negotiation.

Our take...
The approval of Toshiba's 51 GB disc is good news for the HD DVD camp, allowing it to compete directly with rival Blu-ray Disc's (BD) dual-layer 50 GB disc. As with the BD50, it is likely to take some time for production yields to reach a commercially viable level. However, once this has been achieved it will arguably eliminate one of the principle reasons behind some studios' support of Blu-ray over HD DVD, thus potentially making it easier for Disney or Fox to adopt a format-agnostic position without losing face. Meanwhile, the development of a triple-layer single-sided hybrid HD DVD/DVD disc will also be welcomed by HD DVD supporters........

I'll WAIT until Walmart sells a dual-format HD player for $60.
