It is a DI 604 dlink router. I can connect to it fine from my laptop , but my pc gives the error "Destnation host unreachable". The pc recognizes when the network cable is plugged/unplugged, so I doubt it's the cable itself thats the problem. ipconfig /all gives an autoconfig ip address of 169.254.xxx.xxx and a net mask of 255.255.0.0, when the settings should be 192.168.0.xxx and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Ive restarted the pc, reinstalled the NIC drivers, and checked the dhcp settings on the NIC. Ive also checked the settings on the router and eerything looks ok there also. Pretty tapped outta ideas now...

Gigabyte mobo
Win2K Pro w/ latest SP
1.4 GHz or something AMDk
512 MB RAM
80GB Maxtor HDD
Onboard Realtek NIC
Comcast 3.0 mbps broadband
Dlink DI-604 Router

EDIT: When I check the login and check the connections on the router itself, it shows that the PC has been given the ip address 192.168.0.100. The pc itself shows something else, an autoconfig ip shows above

169.254.xxx.xxx is the default windows IP... see it all the time when there is something wrong. Try running ipconfig

you will need to /flushdns then /release then /renew

Text Microsoft website...

Let me know if this works

Oh sh*t - I don't know why I didn't notice that - read it as 192.xxx.xxx yeah 169 is what happens when your machine isn't connected to any network

damn I feel stupid for missing that

hey guys, thanks for the suggestions, im on a friends pc right now. Ill try the suggestions as soon as I get home. KarenMarie, ive never come across the flushdns command, do you think that might be the reason? I was going to replace my NIC card with another one even though windows shows the device as operating correctly, but ill try flushdns first. Thanks

I also tried using a usb cable to connect to my cable modem directly, and while ipconfig did show me an attbi ip address, i still wasnt able to ping or browse on the web.

MaxDSP,
I cannot see exactly what is going on there... But since the router is showing the correct IP, that should be ok. The default WIN IP 169.254xxx.xxx tells me that there is a problem with the computer, not the router or modem. I figure that if you flush it all out, and release, renew... you will start fresh.

Let us know if it works!!

Did you try another cable, and another port on the router?
I have seen both of those scenarios.

Ive tried all the suggestions but none of them worked. However, I checked the Event Viewer and found an error related to the file wpsdrvnt not starting up. I searched it and found a copy of it in the Panda Antivirus folder. Coincedentally, I installed Panda Antivirus on Saturday, a little bit before my connection went down. All out of ideas and desperate to try anything, I unistalled the antivirus program and restarted, and lo and behold, my connection was back up! I dont know eactly how Panda screwed up my settings but it did something terrible to my system.

I guess I hsould stick to McAfee or something

Thanks for the help KarenMarie, skyking, and ppc

I am glad you got it sorted.

I would not, however, be so quick to write off Panda antivirus. We have been using Panda Internet Security for over a year and have never had a problem with it. I have never heard of anyone having this problem with it. Strange... learn something everyday, huh?

I am glad you got it sorted though!

That's sort of why I took so long in unistalling it, I know Panda AV is pretty good as Ive used it in the past on a different machine. I think it might've had something to do with the firewall settings, even though I had them turned off. I'm going to try ot e-mail Panda support tomorrow and see if they know of anything similar other users have reported and what the cause might be.

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I think I have the same problem you have. My wireless stopped working a few days after I installed Panda AV

No, sorry, I never followed up with Panda support to find out the source of the issue. What kind of problems is your wireless having?
