The main problem for me is the sensitivity of the stick (on the PS3 controller at least). There seems to be a fairly large distance that you can push a stick before there's response like the friction-zone of a clutch. After that, it takes very little movement to accelerate your movement.

I just started a this past weekend on Resistance, and I got better over an hour or two. If I gave it more time, I' d probably adapt, but it will probably never be as good as with a mouse and keyboard.

Analog stick control will always be ok at best for FPS. I play Halo 3 regularly on the 360 over LIVE, and also games like GRAW and R6:V offline in co-op. Usually end up being one of the top scoring players in each match, but the controls are still frustrating to use and feel like ass compared to any PC shooter. CoD4 has some of the smoothest analog control of any console game I've played, but sniping in the game is near impossible. I'd take a ball mouse, or even a trackball thumb mouse over analog sticks any day.

I've played Halo, Halo 2, Gears of War, COD 3. I've never gotten used to the controls. Half-way through, I get kinda used to them, but it's still very crappy controls that will never match a keyboard and mouse. It didn't stop me from enjoying the games though.

Sort of, but console controls will never be as responsive to me as PC controls.

on xbox 360 cod4, I almost always get positive score. You won't be able to get used to the controls completely, but as days progresses, you get better. My most annoying thing in console gaming is that I'm not able to look around for campers and claymors, due to the less sensitive controls.

the only two games with default controls that are easy to master is COD4 and Halo 3 for the 360

no, i need keyboard and mouse, or a point/shoot gun. I can't get controllers to work out for me ever.

I have been an avid pc gamer for over 10+ years and just got a 360 in November. I am just starting to get used to the controller for fps console shooters. I am still no where near as accurate as I am with a kb/mouse and I don't ever think I will be. However, I am having a blast with the 360 and Xbox Live. It brought back the good times I used to have at our monthly LANs. Now we all connect on Xbox Live, game and yell at each other like old times. We are all in our mid 30s and have families - this is perfect for us now. I have not had this much fun gaming in a long time. I think UT3 may be the last pc game I purchase for a while. COD4 is just awesome.

Yes almost instantly. I did play games on a console first however but the dual analog control scheme hadn't come out yet.

Nope, I still suck playing a FPS with a gamepad, although I do like the control scheme that gmes like Gears and Uncharted bring to the table.

I grew up gaming on both the console and PC, though I still prefer the KB+M. Funny, though, I have to play inverted as well. Perhaps PC gamers are more likely to prefer inverted controls?

If they would just give consoles native mouse support, I'd snag one tomorrow and upgrade my PC every 5 years or so. I just don't enjoy playing with the joystick...I know some people are good with it, and that I probably could become good if I spent enough time. But it just isn't any fun fumbling with that damn controller in FPS to me.

Yeah. Gears, Uncharted, R6:Vegas, etc are much, much better than trying to do PC-style FPS on a console.

I play inverted too, maybe we do it because it is more like a old flight stick and flight sim?

BTW, this thread needs a poll, and I would vote yes, since I feel comfortable with the sticks now. Consequently, I have no, nor make any, excuses, when I get my ass handed to me playing on XBL.

i used to only play FPS on PC.

now i don't play PC games at all and i don't plan on going back to PC gaming ever.

it takes some time to get used to but you can do it no problem. it will never be as precise as a mouse/kb but everyone is on even playing fields. those who cry about controlling FPS on a controller are sad.

I played fps on the PC for years. When my wife bought me my 360, I decided I was tired of keeping up with PC hardware trends. I made a complete switch and no longer game on the PC. It took just a little while to get used to the differences, but it wasn't so bad. Now I don't miss the mouse+keyboard combination at all.

the best part is not having to upgrade your computer constantly and being able to sit back and relax on the sofa fragging n00bs on Guardian =D

The best thing about upgrading your PC constantly is that when a game comes out broke, you'll likely get a patch within hours of it being on store shelves if not before it's even out, where as when you have a problem with a game like TF2 on the 360, you have to sit and wait for MS to approve the patch.

I may be sad, but I will play FPS that are available on the PC on the PC first and foremost, and go out of my way to avoid console FPS that would take 17-20 buttons to work efficiently on a PC, but is whittled down to only 8-10 buttons on a console gamepad.

Hotkeys that allow weapon changes on the fly as opposed to being forced to cycle through weapons every time you want to change to something else will always win out in my book. If that's sad, I'll just be sad.

i haven't played a console FPS in years that has a "weapons cycle" button. infact, i can't even remember the last FPS that I played on a console that has one of those buttons where you can carry 143892 different weapons.

I can't seem to adjust at all. Metroid Prime 3 is the only console FPS that I've actually enjoyed. I really want to play bioshock, but it's just too frustrating. Everyone just needs to do what UT3 is doing w/ the PS3... let me plug in a damn keyboard and mouse.

I haven't played a ton of console FPSes, but they don't seem to allow you to carry an entire armory in your backpack. Halo 3 allows one in reserve and up to 2 in your hands. R6: Vegas allows two large guns and one handgun. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune allows one large gun and one handgun. Crackdown allows two weapons of any type IIRC. That's the way a lot of games seem to be going. It may not be desirable to everyone, but it's more realistic.

The other way to do it is with a button that brings up a selection screen, then an analog stick is used to select the weapon. Bioshock does this, and essentially pauses the game when you are selecting a weapon. That doesn't work for multiplayer of course. Saints Row does it too, but doesn't pause the game. Not that big a deal though, because you can change weapons pretty quickly that way. That allows for the selection of 8 different weapons and takes up only one button on the controller.

I played cod2 and CS:S in CAL / TWL , so I can say that I have played a lot of FPS on the PC. I was hesitant about picking up first person shooters on the console, but let me tell you that you get used to it, you really just have to be patient and get the hang of it. I personally don't see myself going back to PC for various reasons.
