You start out at something like 6000BCE, and have to have settlers create towns, and research new technologies, culminating in either victory through military might, cultural achievements (building wonders of the world and such), or being the first to win the space race.

Sounds exactly like RON, which I used to play often.

I played Civ2 and it was exactly that. How do they keep making the same game over and over again?

They add new features to make some things easier, new combat, etc
Same as basically every game that has a sequel. "Bigger and better."

The original Civ predates RON

yeah but you're doing the same thing over again. usually sequels continue the storyline or something.

I am not playing PC games really. I've been really into old-school consoles. I bought a N64 a couple weeks ago and Ocarina of Time and Mario 64. I also am going to bring my SNES back to my dorm with me next semester so I can play Link to the Past and some other classics...

I've gotten tired of my PC to be honest. I'm thinking about selling it

Anachronox again.

How is that? I read a rather incoherent review on it the other day, but it sounded interesting. I was thinking of digging around for a copy.

Absolutely killer for me - I usually don't play games twice, but I'm back for more. Thing was, this game was released as an incredibly buggy game, but the developers spent their own time creating patches. With the most current patch, it's a pleasure to play.

As for the game, it's very FF-ish, just with sci-fi instead of fantasy. Similar battle system. Magic/Mystech is complicated, more so than I recall FF being. It's more of an adventure/RPG; for every hour you spend in combat, you'll spend two doing avdenturish things - you're a PI, so you might be tracking someone and tacking pictures of them; figuring out puzzles; talking to people to get clues; or playing mini-games. Speaking of which, each character has a unique ability you'll need to apply, and each is its own little game.

Game looks dated, but it's done more with the Q2 engine than I've ever imagined. Low polygon counts, diluted textures, but the latest patch supports higher resolutions. The game plays like a movie - stunning cinematography, excellent voice acting, a perfect musical score, gripping plot, all done with engine cut scenes. I think someone went to the trouble to capture the cutscenes together to make a video.

If you can find it cheap, I'd suggest giving it a go (once you've patched it, of course).

Don't look at it as a sequal, but rather the next incarnation or something. Every basketball game I've ever played was pretty damn similar, but they keep releasing them year after year. Civ is a game without a story and characters and such. It's just so fvcking addicting.
