In the past I have built my own PC's but this time would prefer to purchase one. I am looking to spend $1500 - $2000. Any suggestions on a good place to buy one from? I don't care for Dell nor do I need a PC that has some funky case, lights and all that junk. I just want a PC that is as fast as possible for the money.

Thanks!

Agreed. HP, from what I've experiences has great customer service. They fedxed OVERNIGHT an empty box to me to send my laptop in for service and I got the laptop back within a week ( the screen died on it)

You will probably be fine with any of the major PC builders; on top are Dell and HP. You can find some of the lesser known builders in most PC magazines and then poke around for customer reviews (with a grain of salt.) Some are "gamer" PC's with lights, windowed panels etc and some have poor customer experiences.

My main problem with the major builders is all the software crap they install! (As I type this on a Toshiba laptop which came with a lot of useless crap

The problem with Dell and HP is they often make you buy too much case and CPU just to get a decent video card, and if you buy their cheaper systems you can't trust the PSU with a midrange video card.

Ideally you'd be able to buy something like this:

intel E8400, P43 chipset motherboard, 4 GB PC800, ATI 4870, 640 GB HD, DVD burner, Vista Home Premium . . .

. . . for close to the approx. $825 - $850 it would cost you for parts from Newegg, say under $1,000 since you're getting a warranty.

Good luck getting Dell or HP to let you put a 4870 or the revised GTX 260 into a sub-$1,000 system.

Pay me $100 and I'll build it for you, it's not like it takes much time or effort tbh and I can give you a much better system than Dell or HP. The only thing I can't give you is a warrenty, but I will give you something better - a guarantee, that the system I build for you will be a lot faster than the one you would of got from Dell/HP. If your interested in a brand name I can create one and get a friend to draw some artwork for a logo, I'm creative and am willing to please.

The only thing I can't give you is peace, but I can give you something better - a guarantee, that when I leave I will be back in exactly one week having meditated for at least three days, and my posting will be a lot better and a lot faster than the posts you would of got from TidusZ. If your interested in a new username I can create one and PM a moderator to ask you to change yours to it, I'm creative and willing to please.

Yeah, unfortunately no-one really builds gaming systems. The problem is, people aren't willing to pay a decent margin for custom machines and there's not enough volume to make low margins profitable.

HardOCP used to have some fascinating OEM reviews where they'd evaluate the whole consumer experience -- customization, installed crapware, tech support, and RMA.

Don't know why they stopped, but I recall Maingear being one of the best-scoring. The big names ended up rather mixed.

Seriously build your own. You can build and save a ton if you utilize newegg's combo packs effectively. 4gb ram/E8400 and 4870 for less than $700.

There are plenty of gaming system manufacturers. Falcon Northwest, VooDoo and (last time I looked), Alienware are among the elite. HP's Blackbird system is supposed to be a screamer too. Systems from these builders cost a bundle, but obviously people are indeed "willing to pay a decent margin for custom machines" seeing as these companies have been in business for a while.

Lower priced gaming systems are available from companies such as CyberPower and IBuyPower; pick up any PC gaming magazine and scan the ads for more.
