PCI-E technology development

I'm planning to purchase a new computer soon, and I was wondering about which step should I move towards. Stick with an AGP slot Mobo, or pay just a tad more for one with a PCI-e slot? I've seen some benchmarks on moderate AGP cards with moderate PCI-e cards (pcx5700 and atix600 [i think, could be have been the 700]) with results fairing roughly the same against one another.

So I was just wondering whether or not I should go with the PCI-e or stick with an AGP. Although technology has the ability to change itself rapidly within a couple of weeks, will PCI-e become popular and be utilized to its maximum capability soon or, maybe in some years to come? Thanks for the replies.

If you are going Intel, I would definately get the PCI express setup.

I would go that route except I cannot find any 6800 GT's or Ultras for PCI express.

It's not for any advantage in video card performance today, but it does help future-proof yourself a little bit and I am really looking forward to PCI express SCSI and RAID cards!!!

AGP will slowly fade out of the spotlight. The next major round of video cards I bet there will be AGP and PCI express flavors, but after that... AGP will probably become more mainstream and eventually budget. As I am a consumer of SCSI devices and high-end graphics cards, I would prefer PCI express.

I would go for PCI-E too, but don't buy the GeForce PCX or Radeon X600 cards. The X700 and GeForce 6600 have been released and they're much faster. You can already find the 6600 and 6600GT in some places.

PCI-E is here to stay. The chipset makers are all supporting it as well as the major video card manufacturers.

I would personally go PCI-E simply for the ease of future upgrading.

Thanks guys! Well, I was thinking of making this computer for about $1000, all products from newegg.

intel3.2
gigabyte mobo
ocz 2-2-2-2 pc3200 1gb
74 WD raptor
asus nvidia pcx5900

however, after reading that RAM post earlier, I'm not quite sure which ram I would like. Secondly, I noticed many people who mention AMD will follow up with Corsair RAM, and for Intel, follow up with OCZ RAM. Do you guys know why? This maybe an entirely different issue, but hey, less post the better right?

if your budget is 1000 you should probably go amd, but p4 prices are looking pretty sweet.

ram timings arnt so important, springing for the 2-2-2 isnt going to let you see any gains besides some benchmarks. and as long as you dont get no name brand ram you should be ok, the big names like ocz and crosair are pretty much going to work on whatever recent motherboard your looking into.
