I have a pretty old 7600GT that's been acting pretty weird over the last couple of days. When I took out the card I noticed that the metal part below was completely melted away. Do you think this is the cause for the message?
If there is a part on your graphics card that melted (and it's not just a sticker or something), then yes, that probably could cause problems.
Alternatively, maybe the card was just seated incorrectly.
what do you mean 'melted away'? it takes a lot of heat to dislodge a surface mount component especially with lead-free solder. was there a component there in the first place? if there was you'd probably have far worse problems.
in the first revision of the card they probably put extra components on the card and in later revisions decided it wasn't necessary.
There was actually no component there. It had nine equal silver square-looking things as shown in the first pic. Mines looks like the one below but 10x worse. Tried re-seating the card a couple times but no success. I also didn't overclock as I only play sports games but the performance does take a big hit at 1x.
