What I want to know is what kind of performance I can get out of an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA motherboard.
How high will that board allow me to take the FSB and hence the overclock on the 805?
I've heard of only getting as high as:
146 FSB * 20x Multiplier = 2920 MHz (2.92 GHz).

Is this true? Can i take it higher on this board?

sure. you could probably do 166 x 20 = 3.33ghz, if you have very good air cooling + air flow

The ASRock 775Dual-VSTA doesn't allow the changing of the VCore (CPU) voltage.
I just bought a new case that has good air flow.
What then (with stock HSF (for now))?

The minimum i want to get to is 150 * 20 = 3GHz.

that should work, i wouldn't go beyond that w/ the stock HSF

There is no guarantee you'll get anywhere near that, especially if you can't up the Vcore.

That board might support a Prescott, but that doesn't mean the board manufacturer knows how small of a case someone's going to slap it in. I wouldn't put a Prescott in an SFF case either. You're just asking for throttling. That, or a tornado's worth of fan noise to keep it from throttling.

I couldn't get mine that high with the stock HSF, went over 70c and shut down, even with the case cover open. Why again did you buy this with the X2's @ $150 ?

good question; he's already forking over $$$ for DDR2 and a cheap S775 mobo that supports Conroe; why not go the distance and get an E6300? the extra $100 for that CPU will make up for more than enough in headaches (heat problems, netburst), electricity (1/3 power usage), and that E6300 at stock is probably equal to an 805D @ 3.8ghz

Very interesting...but now i'm thinking of a Pentium D 915 (lol...don't laugh at me).
It's much better than the 805 (obviously not as good as a Conroe) and can overclock well.
Plus...its much cooler.
Pros: 65nm....800MHz....2.8GHz stock....2x2MB L2
Cons: D805 +$40 = $139.49 @ Newegg

I know you will say I should get a E6300 but...
Don't forget where I live (Jamrock)...I could still get a good resale for a 915...
Then I'd upgrade my mobo, gfx card and get a E6600 when the prices stabilize (after all the gouging).

What are your thoughts on that approach ?

Sounds good Cheex. I don't know why the OP insisted that his motherboard chipset won't support the 915. Anything that supports the 805 should support the 915 to my knowledge, though anyone here is free to prove me wrong. I always like to learn new things.

Well I've made up my mind to buy the D915. I should be able to get 25% OC out of it (2.8 to 3.5).

What you think ?

I too have a 805d and would I be shopping today I would not buy this chip again. It runs very hot and has already killed two cheap mobos I had (Asus p5p 800se). A 915 seems to be a better choice, but as you already know a 6300 is a better still. I'd get a conroe, you're going to feel the urge upgrade to it soon anyway so why even bother with a 915?
