Pedal to the metal!

So here's something I've been wondering for a while now... Can I reasonably expect to be able to accelerate my car as fast as I can, so long as I don't chirp the tires or go over the speed limit?

Are there any defining laws on this, or is it pretty much a 'too fast for conditions' call on the side of the police?

I have talked with LEOs about this, and basically what it comes down to is....if there is no chirping of tires/bad driving/speeding..... they would have a hard time ticketing you for anything.

I have heard CHP officers say this, and they are pretty much the authority on vehicle codes.

You might get a ticket for speed contest (drag racing) if it looks like you're racing the car next to you. If you light up the tires, it's generally considered "exhibition of speed".

LOL. What kind of car was it?

Edit: Unsafe start maybe?

I do this quite frequently and have never been ticketed. This is not to say I never will, though.

Yeah I've found myself starting to accelerate a bit more now that I'm getting comfortable with my car. Warming weather, potholes finally getting filled, and people stacking up in lanes leaving one free all help too

Thanks for the replies so far.

My dad used to get "exhibition of speed" tickets for chirping the tires on his Camaro when he was in high school

Edit: I put the pedal to the metal in my truck every once in a while to blow the carbon out. It's fun, but all it does is make a lot of noise and cause the gas gauge to visibly move.

I have a related question... if I choose to do a burnout on a private parking lot, can the pocheese do anyting to me if they aren't called by the property owners?

Like if I burn rubber in a grocery store parking lot... then proceed to drive normally on the the road and continue about my business??

I think it depends on whose lot it is... Some retail property owners have agreements with the police. I think that leaving black marks on private property would be vandalism too.

?

For accelerating up a freeway ramp, or on a 55mph road with a stoplight at it?

I :laugh:ed at this!

I've noticed, if I want to go as fast as I can on a highway with faster acceleration at the top gear (auto), by turning Overdrive off, that I definitely burn through gas faster, but not sure by how much. I just leave OD on anymore, because it's not worth it and would probably cause me to get a ticket. Only real good use for it is on highways trying to achieve an even higher speed. On city streets its utterly pointless since all of the acceleration is at the lower gears.
<--- drives a V6 Dakota. Weak little thing. I5's and V6's of the smaller mid-size trucks have faster acceleration, since they are lighter.

with city roads, you are definitely more likely to attract unwanted police attention. Can't see acceleration on a highway ever being something bad. Sometimes its better to accelerate really fast, as it can be argued it was ultimately safer due to merging or passing.

Frankly, not that many people who floor it away from a stoplight actually let off exactly at the speed limit. Even if you stop at the flow of traffic, that's probably still speeding. And if you know there is a cop watching, you'd be a moron to attract attention to yourself even if you don't exceed the limit.

So just use your brain and look around you before you give it the boot.

Yeah, I drove a 1990 Geo Prism that I had to floor to get up a hill.

down here it's usually ok UNLESS 1) you peel out (not just a chirp) and/or 2) the asshat next to you decides to make it a street race.

Even if you had no intention on racing that alone can get you in serious shit.

I know at one point they were impounding cars...someone said they overturned that law, but it's not worth the risk to test it. I drive spirited, I don't race anymore because stop light battles have turned from winning when you obviously have a car length or more on the opponent to idiots running to 100mph+ and blowing traffic signals/stop signs doing it.

It's possible to get ticketed, yes

Why would you want to do it? It consumes a lot more gas (yes, I'm aware that an engine is reaching its peak efficiency during full acceleration, but your over all gas consumption is still greater when you peel out)

Because it's fun, obviously. If fuel mileage was the ONLY reason for driving, we'd all ride bicycles.
