I am getting ready to install a Peltier kit on my T-bird 1100. My HSF is a FOP32-1(delta black label) on a Abit KT7. Any words of wisdom before I start? I looks like alot of stuff to cram in there.

make sure you put the cold side down!! on the core that is: ) and i also hear that if your using a high power peltier 72 w and above that its advisable to use watercooling as most aircoolers arent powerful enuff to disappate that kind of heat: ( good luck though!

I wouldn't do it! Just don't think the FOP will be able to dissipate all the heat.

Just like kw3i said, use watercooling to be on the safe side. Keep in mind you have to get rid of all the extra heat the peltier generates. It will also be wise to invest in a higher rated power supply - or a second one.

Yea, make sure you aren't using that FOP on the hot side, it will never dissipate the heat fast enough from a 85watt peltier. Your system will over-heat. Check out this page over at peltec for good peltier solutions.

Get a copper spacer from http://www.3dfxcool.com/
There is a LOT of pressure directly on the core from the HS.

From 3DFXCool.com:
PELTIER USE: In our opinion using one of these spacers is the only safe way to use a Peltier kit on Socket A. The added thickness of a Peltier and cold plate, usually 10mm total, creates very strong down force on the processor and can damage the soft AMD core. The Socket A Spacer Shim completely protects the CPU core from this smashing damage. So, our line is don't use a Peltier without one!!

DO NOT USE A SHIM. They are for wimps who can't put on a heatsink right, and by definition the reduce the effectivness of your peltier and/or put added risk on the CPU core. It is better to use extenions for the CPU clips to reduce the amount of force on the core. As for your Peltier, it might be too much for the FOP, but you can increase your chances by using Artic Silver instead of thermal paste, and LAP THE HEATSINK AND COLD PLATE. My FOP32-1 was very rough on the bottom, tons of little grooves. Lapping it till it was polished helped heat transfer a lot. You might have a chance if you work at it, but a Tbird and an 85 watt Pelt will be pretty tough to cool.

LOL, "use water cooling to be on the safe side." OXYMORON.

Good luck to you, harbinger.

Actually, I envy the people with water-cooling, but I'm not stupid/rich enough to risk my components that way.

Hmmm...

I've just borrowed a 72W peltier at work, does anyone know whether a FOP32-1 is powerfull enough for this and a 1 GHz TB?

Another question: How the f... am I supposed to turn on a spare ATX supply? I figure I'm supposed to short the "ATX supply on" with one of the GND leads next to it? Or maybe the +5V STB lead? One of my pals also told me to make sure it has a ~1 amp load? Is that on the +12 V or the +5 V?

Thanx a lot in advance...

spamboy,

"LOL, "use water cooling to be on the safe side." OXYMORON."

There are places selling air-cooled peltier units; I just don't consider it safe. It might work for 72w peltiers, but, I doubt 72w is enough to cool a TBird at 1Ghz and above.

Do you know of any air cooled HS able to cool a, say 118w peltier effectively?

okay, so I took your guys advice and decided to use "water cooling" to keep the peliter down... here are my conclusions:

1) First of all, its not worth the continuous hassle of throwing cupfulls of water on the cpu..
2) Half the time my computer won't even boot
3) When it does boot, it only shows a blue screen
4) The popping and crackling noises are getting annoying
5) The lights in my house keep flickering
6) The smoke detectors keep going off

so despite what some recommend, water cooling just aint all it is cracked up to be.. stick with blowing on the processor... I prefer a straw-extension so I can sit back and type while blowing
