Pentium 3 700E to 933?

I last overclocked with my old system a Celeron 300A @450. Now I am buying a new system and would like to know what the latest and greatest overclocking CPU is so I can get the most bang for my buck. I looked into AMD Duron overclocking but it doesn't really seem like a good idea. Is the Pentium 700E to 933 the greatest thing around right now? If so what should I know before I purchase? Like retail only, certain serial numbers only, etc. Also, what would a good microATX motherboard and memory be for that CPU if that's the one? Thanks, this forum kicks ass!

I would say so. I'm about to toss in my p3 450@558 for a 700E. I'm ordering from OnVia, ~$215 after rebates, free shipping. Most of the 700E's from OnVia have been the new cB0 stepping, and I think everyone who gets that stepping has been going to 133fsb (933MHz) or more. If you check the Hot Deals forum, there's two threads on that chip from OnVia and C4Sure.

Also, look in the overclocking forum...some people have been reaching speeds above 1001MHz. Can't wait for mine.

As for the board, you might scroll down in the General Hardware forum and look for the thread about the guy who wants a BX board. Basically we're trying to talk him out of it and get a Solano (i815) based board. I'd say you'd be best off getting this too, because it's going to replace the BX eventually, and it has ata/100, etc, etc. The Asus CUSL2 is the king right now, but you'll have to wait a little while to get it.

As for memory, you should definately buy some pc133 if you plan on overclocking. Check out the fs/ft forum, some people are selling cas2 pc133 that can hit cas2 speeds above 150MHz.

Is there anyway to make sure I get the cBO stepping? Also, does the CPU go from 700 to 933 just by raising the fsb to 133?

Well, you can order from someone who guarantees it. Compuwiz1 from these forums is very reputable and he guarantees that you'll get the cB0 stepping (it's cB-zero )

a 700e with CB0 stepping is pretty much guaranteed at 933. The yeilds on this chip are amazing. I haven't seen one that hasn't reached 933.
