Is there any more info on what intel have planned for it? as ive heard good things about the pentium M.

Ooooh that is nice, the return of high IPC computing from intel

Hopefully this doesnt come with a 150W TDP range

I wonder if it'll actually be called the Pentium 5. The Pentium was originally named after the 5th generation of x86 cpus (root of pent-). So the Pentium 5 would be 5th generation 5th generation x86 architecture?

Its an X86 CPU - also it has to "associate" with consumers when it comes to marketing...

That's why it's funny. It's like Chevrolet bringing back the Malibu and Impala, but making them boring fwd vehicles instead of the classy rwd cars that people knew them as.

nah, lets think of a REALLY cool name for it, that will strike fear into those that don't use Intel, like..... THE TITANIUM PROCESSOR! NOT THE ITANIUM!

isn't pentium 5 technically that new p4 that underperforms but has a way longer pipeline?

I would like to see Intel have something like Cool n' Quiet and hopefully this might include a SpeedStep desktop variation.

Lower clock speeds / more efficiency...... the MHz myth is toast I sure hope they can get away from the stupid Pentium name:roll:

I think that with the recent shift towards model numbers, Intel is preparing terrain to introduce Pentium M variant chips to the desktop. In the end, every desktop will be a Pentium, every mobile part a Centrino, and every server a Xeon or Itanium. No need for version numbers (II, !!!, 4 or 5) ... just the corresponding model number.

I don't think they will rename anything until they go 64-bit, and you can bet that '64' will be part of the name. I think they will do something simple, like Pentium64, just liike AMD. Also, like AMD (Opteron, FX), I think there will be model numbers after the name like Pentium64 600 for example. It won't be a speed rating like the like Athlon XP. IMO, even if they don't stick with the Pentium moniker, it will end in 'ium', like Itanium and it will include '64'... To switch the name from something as recognizable as Pentium to something completely different would be silly, and to not push 64-bit would be even more silly.

i've heard they will be dropping the pentium numbering system in favor of an AMD-style "rating" system.

yes, and it's even more confusing than AMD's system... and starting at a "higher" number... this is going to drive consumers nuts.... the mhz myth will be replaced w/ model number myth...

Prescott? No, thats just P4.

no, i think its the p5 really. they just can't name it that for marketing reasons...too confusing, its slower etc etc.

its a netburst archetecture, its a p4

It's not like the generation of the underlying architecture matters much, it's all marketing.

Pentium Pro -> Pentium II -> Pentium III were all P6/i686 based.
Heck the Katmai Pentium III added nothing but SSE and the CPU serial number, and that got a "name bump".

Yeah, it was originally supposed to be, until it did a gigantic belly-flop, then they decided to call it the P4 Prescott.

RE:"ya, from wut i've heard, the P5 will be based on the pentium M."

Now, that would be a real kick in the ass.

Back to the P3 core.
