I woould have hoped to see people ask what his case air flow is like. And what is his ambient temps.

If it was my rig I would set up a duct on my side panel so the heat sink has a direct path to room air and not heated case air. This alone would shave at least 10c of load and idle temps.Additionally i would make sure the heat sink was mounted correctly . .

I think it's kind of sad that the Pentium D does so badly with the stock HSF. Intel usually had a good rep for including sufficient stock cooling for normal operation, but the stock HSFs just don't seem to cut it on the 5xx P4s and Pentium Ds.

I have an air channel in my case asper intel requirement for PENTIUM D. It covers the the fan and the other side attached with the side panel. The difference between intel fan and Thermaltake-silent775 fan is the cover. Intel fan is without cover. The duct is well attached with the cover of TK-Silent775. It is my understanding maybe I am wrong, If the duct make air tight contact with fan it will be cooler for processor.

I recently pulled off my AC from the window because the cooler season is around but unfortunately weather is still hot 25 celcius in Toronto. You note that with Intel heatsink and fan I was getting around 60 celcius without overclocking and the AC was on in my room.

If anybody could guide me for the link to download any free benchmarking software without spyware.

you should NOT be comparing your computer while running gaming benchmarks. its a dual core cpu, look for some multi-threaded appz

IIRC, 3Dmark03 is strictly a single thread benchmark...

yeah, but an x300? would you even expect to compete?!

I choose a wrong benchmark software for processor testing. I just want to see if after overclocking to 3.36 GHZ the performance is equal to the same kind (single core) processors or not.

I checked in PC Mark performance test V6: CPU mark=812.70

hmmm.. try CrystalMark or if you have any of these DVDS, AutoGK

i'll see you there

I'm running a D 820 on an Asus P5LD2 with a stock heat sink and OCZ thermal gel. I had some trouble getting the heat sink installed properly, it took me a couple tries to get it on their tight enough. When I finally did, the BIOS would show the temperature creep up to about 70*c (!) before stabilizing (open case). Thing is, the CPU fan would be slowly increasing in speed as well. I'd say it went from about 1500rpm at 60*c to about 1700rpm at 70*c. This ad (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/...-details.asp?EdpNo=1116581&CatId=1588) shows the fan as rated for 2500-3500rpm. In my BIOS, I have the fan speed set to "Performance", which should be the fastest setting. So it seems that the cpu wants to run at 70*C. Once I got windows installed on my system, the rest temp was about 54*C. I ran S&M, hoping to see if it would throttle under load. Under 100% load, it would creep up to 81*c, while the cpu fan would increase to only 1800rpm or so. Throttling would occur at around 81*C.

Why isn't my fan going any faster (yes, it is plugged in to the cpu fan connector, and not a chassis fan connector) to keep the temp down? If I get a better heat sink, wouldn't the fan just end up running slower, rather than the temp being lower? Could the problem just be my MB not reporting temps properly?

820D@3.43. Open case with 1200mm fan exiting the open hole, and a big typhoon cooler, 52-60c depending on abient temp (window is open right next to it, sometimes gets down to 40f. If I close the case, it goes right to 70c and shuts down.

In a word, a flamethower !!!!!

And trolling...sorry.. I mean throthling even more?
TROLL, TROLL....

BTW, in my other thread on the 820D, I have OC'ed benchmarks. fatty just ignored those since the 820 did so bad....

Old thread I know, but I cant believe how hot my PD is running...

I'm getting about 61 idle, and it keeps hitting 70 even when I do something like a virus scan...

Good thing my new heatsink will be here today

I have the oppurtunity to purchase the Intel retailedge bundle, but with all the temp problems I've been hearing/reading about, I think I may just stick to the tried and true AMD's. The bundle deal is a great price, but if it's going to light my apartment on fire, I'd rather just spend more and stick to what I know =P

Hey guys, I am also having the same problem with processor temperatures. I purchased the "Intel RetailEdge" Pentium D 820 and Intel Desktop Board D945PSN bundle.

My idle temp is at 59 degrees Celsius on the stock heatsink/fan. Ran ThrottleWatch and no throttling. I have a side mount fan, and two rear 80mm fans for exhaust. My case is missing a 120mm fan for intake in the front, which I am planning on purchasing today to see if it has any effect on my CPU temps.

Any other suggestions? I know I could purchase a better processor fan, but I've also heard some users with "normal" temps on a stock cooler.

I gave up on air cooling with m Pentium-D 830. It's now running at 47c under load with water cooling, stock speeds, stock voltage. I was running at 80c with the stock heatsink, Thermaltake jungle 512 brought it down to around 71c. Meanwhile my X2 overclocked to 2.618ghz, 1.475v, gets 51c under load, with the stock AMD heatsink and thermal pad.

Throttlewatch doesn't seem to work correctly with the 8xx cpu's.

There may be one thing that everyone is overlooking, especially the ones that are running 59-65C at BIOS.

I thought I mounted the stock HSF on my Celeron D running at 2.53GHz properly. I had BIOS temperatures of 65C and even 80C when on load using Intel's Thermal Monitor(I have Intel Desktop Boards). I thought it was because being based on Prescott, it just ran hot. I was getting freezeups in Diablo 2 and knew it was overheating problem because I had that same problem when thermal paste got messed up after playing around taking out the chip which was a Pentium III so many times. I even bought AS5, which seemed to work a bit, since it brought temps down by 5-7C in BIOS, but I screwed HSF mount even more and broke one of the mounting plastic(which then I definitely knew I need a new HSF).

So I bought Intel's stock HSF again. What I find is that they are extremely difficult to mount PROPERLY. I found a certain way to mount them properly. Look at the mounting plastic at the side when mounting.

The rules:
1. Push down the mounting plastic in criss-cross fashion to have stability.
2. Look at the side where the mounting plastic is(the one where you push down), and make sure the black part of the mounting plastic goes below the notch on the white part of the plastic.

After I have done that, the temperatures at BIOS went down from 63C average to 48C average(I currently have the mobo out the case and connected just the cables because I don't want to mount the mobo back in the case since I want a new case, so now its at 44C).

There are no more freezeups either. The highest temps I have ever seen doesn't exceed 65C.

I am using default thermal pad that came with the new cooler, not the AS5 to get those temps.

MAKE SURE THE HSF IS MOUNTED PROPERLY FIRST.

My friend using 2.4C@3.2GHz has 35C at load and 32C at idle using stock cooler which is extremely low even for that CPU, even lower than PMs so it could be the differences between individual CPUs and system configuration(like the amount of fans, I have zero additional ones, and case design).

Thats a northwood..and northwoods have never had the heating problems of prescotts..my overclocked 2.4c ram nice and cool as well, although not quite that cool. But there are always slight differances for everyone, ambient temp, case airflow, and I think some chips just run hotter than others.

My Pentium D 840 was running stock at 65 idle and 95 full load in everest and MBM with stock cooling and AS5. It now is using an arctic cooler freezer 7 and never crosses 50 degrees under full load at 3.6ghz per core.

I've got the intel retail bundle with an 820 and it runs at 65C with both cores under full load from f@h with stock cooling
