Pentium M & Socket 478 MB

Hey y'all,

I wanted to know if it was possible to put a socket 478 pentium M processor into an old intel MB that i have. This old motherboard has an i845 chipset and is currently running a 1.7GHz Pentium 4. I wanted to step up the speed of the system, but didnt want to spend that much. It seems that pentium M's are usually pretty cheap on EBAY compared to the normal chips....

fraid not. different socket arrangement iirc. Yes the P-M chips are cheap on ebay, but the desktop boards are very expensive (well, retail, anyway... Not sure about ebay.) Why do you need to upgrade that system given the pc in your spec though :Q

it is another computer that i have that i am going to be turning into a file server. I just wanted to have as near a silent system as possible, so a pentium M would do well because of the high performance to heat ratio.

Perhaps you are thinking of a Pentium 4M (AKA mobile P4), not a Pentium M. You can also try out a mobile Celeron. Those are inexpensive and have a fighting chance of working in your board. Look for Karaktu's mobile Celeron thread in CPUs and Overclocking.
