Just throwing this out there, if the Centrino had a relatively decent VPU and it was put against a reasonable P4, how would they stack up in modern games? From what i've heard, Centrino is more powerful than a P4 when it comes to clock speed.

I believe Centrino is an Intel marketing term assigned to a laptop that has a Pentium M processor, an Intel chipset, and an Intel branded wireless card.

Both the Banias and Dothan versions of the Pentium M are faster than a similiarly clocked Pentium 4. My Dothan Penium M 1.8Ghz (2MB L2 cache) I believe is as fast as a 2.4-2.6Ghz Pentium 4.

See for yourself:
P4 Vs. AMD Vs. PM

2GHz P-M equals around a P4 3.6GHz or AMD A64 3500+ for gaming.

I run Farcry on my 17" laptop at it's native resolution on 1440x900, with it's 1.8GHz P-M, and ATi mr9700, high quality, and it is flawless. Similar results with Half-Life 2 at 1440x900.

Centrino is NOT a processor.
I do NOT have a Centrino laptop.
Centrino is a chipset "package" that includes a P-M, and also MUST include "Intel" wireless network adaptor.
I skipped the Intel adaptor, and went with the faster Dell 1350, which means I didn't get the Centrino sticker on my laptop.

I just bought the Toshiba $599 deal. it has a 1.3 Celeron M .... how does that compare to say a 1.5 Pentium M ? Any bechmarks that compare Celeron M to Pentium M?

I read otherwise that the Celeron M (Not Celeron Mobile) and Pentium M (Not P4 Mobile) are very similar but I have not been able to find benchmarks that relate the two. I hope I got the good celeron! It seems to fly.

i was looking at the celeron m as well. from what i read i gleaned that it is essentially the pentium m banais. some of them have 1mb of l2 cache some have 512kb depending on the model. also i have heard that some of the power saving gadgets are disabled, never managed to confirm that tho. from what i saw it looks like a cracking mobile processor for the price and will give good battery life too.
cheers

yeah clock for clock the PM is faster than the P4. But the P4 is going to be faster because you can get a higher speed processor like a 3ghz or higher that a PM wont be able to keep up with. The thing is, the PM is much better for a laptop because it uses like 20% of the wattage of a P4 which means longer battery life and less heat.

So if you were to have a PM and a P4 go at it in HL2, Doom 3, Halo or Far Cry, the ram was the same, the vid card was the same, hd the same, the PM would win?

well it depends on which P4. A 3.6 P4 wil be a 1.6 PM. But a 1.6PM will beat a 1.6 P4

If you want to play that game on Batt power the Pm will win every time... LOL... you are best off getting a Pm with the sonoma chipset and a ATI or Nvidia graphx card...

a p4 laptop nowadays is faster than any pentium M solution due to that fact that you can get a geforce 6 series in there...look on tomshardware for those ridiculous laptops

if the two systems were the same the p4 would need at least 1ghz on clock speed to equal the PM.

so everything the same the 2ghz dothan core will be faster than a 3ghz p4

it really depends on what you want the laptop for. PM is for mobility P4 desktop replacement and NOT mobile.

bianas vs dothan, the two are similar except the l2 cache 1mb vs 2mb
for cpu intesnsive task the dothan will edge it out. the real advantage to dothan is more powersaving or more advance

i do not know about the new chipsets for the PM, they aren't widespread yet so reviews aren't too many.

all in all clock for clock PM is greater than P4. they are like amd's in a sense. lower clock but do more.

for a automotive comparison.... american car vs high revving imports.

the import needs to rev higher to make power due to displacement. the big block american doesn't need to rev as high because it has high displacement. so it doesn't really matter what you pick it depends on you

gas saver? gas guzzler.......battery life or no battery life

the new dell 9300 (i think its that or the 8300) has sonoma and 6 series, just a vanilla 6800 i think
