Hi guys,

I am a mac user, but I do have some knowledge with PC's. I am a big fan of AMD. I heard that the P4 extreme edition was very good. What do you recommend? AMD or Pentium. I had a good experience with AMD. How does any of the AMD XP and AMD 64 compare to the Pentium 4 EE? I would like to know about your experience.

Thanks.

If I had the choice I would buy an Intel.

At the current time, prices are similar but AMD's cpu's are faster in almost every category.
About the Extreme Edition p4's, they are just wayy too expensive, and though they are fast, they are definately not worth it. Unless you are a lottery winner.

For example, the Athlon 64 fx-53 is about $850 or so and the EE is above $1000. In most games and applications the FX-53 beats the EE.

These might help:

Click the CPU/Chipset tab at the top of the screen (for lots of AnandTech articles)

Advanced search - "AMD vs" (for lots of P4 vs. AMD threads)

Hi,

I appreciate your responses. I agree that the P4 EE is very expensive. I dont know why, but I was a little tempted in purchasing it. Someone told me that it was better than the AMD 64. But I guess he is wrong. My brother and I were thinking of building a new Home built PC, and we were debating on whether to get the AMD 64 or the P4 EE. AMD seems to be the way to go.

Thanks.

The P4 Extreme Edition with Intel Extreme Graphics (IEG) is the BEST. As a Mac user, you should know that you get what you pay for.

Hi deathkoba,

I appreciate your response. Just curious, why do you think the P4 EE is the best?

As a Mac user, you should know that you get what you pay for.

I know that. The reason I started this topic was to get user opinions on what they think is better.

?? You're mad! The Celeron rocks the EE's world!

LOL!! I have never had a good experience with a celeron.

I think it's generally accepted that AMD is really for gaming, Intel is for all the stuff that a MAC was made for *hint hint*

I think you're better off sticking to the Mac as you'll experience nothing but headaches with PC's. Just imagine having to do everything you didn't need to do with your Mac....scanning for viruses, defragging, removing spyware, plugging and praying, rebooting, looking at the ugly interface (and the frequent bluescreens), Windows security updates, the registry, having to throw out your PC after about a year since it has a low resale value and you have to go through a painful upgrade process since the machine miraculously gets slower and can't handle the same OS etc. causing you to waste more time and money..when your Mac simply doesn't need any kind of upgrades for an incredibly long time and even then, you can resell it close to the original retail price! Also you could do everything a PC could on the Mac especially with Virtual PC, which runs Windows almost as fast as actual PC hardware. Why buy a cheap crappy Pinto when you can have a Ferrari? The choice is simple if you ask me.

Phew, talk about a run-on sentence!

Hi deathkoba,

Thanks for your response. Well, I guess I should stick with my mac. After all, I did have a better experience with my mac then any PC. You made me not want to build a PC anymore. lol. Anyways, I appreciate you helping me out.

Thanks.

Err, aren't you contradicting yourself?

I'm been using Windows XP and 2000 machines for three years and I've had 1 blue screen in that time. While not as stable as OS-X and UNIX based systems, Windows machines have come a long way since the days of Win9X and the rebooting every day to free up memory due to OS memory leaks. I can't believe that I just defended MS?!? Windows machines are more maintenance intensive. Will you be word processing and surfing the WWW mostly? If so you could go PC and load a Linux distribution.

When people start giving a flying f*** about MACS then you will see viruses getting written....

MAC Os ? (?=- whatever) probably has as many vulnerabilities as windows but nobody cares enough to spend time looking for them...

Virus writers get a lot more return for their effort with the PC.. more noob PC users who can only just manage to turn the thing on and write an email never mind about install firewalls, virus checkers etc

Nah, MacOS is by nature far more secure than any flava of Windoze. It's nearly impossible to write hacks and viruses for them. That's traditionally been one of the best selling points about them. Also IF in the rare case a vulnerability is found, Apple patches it quick and is a VERY simple download. You just click yes on the software update notification.

that is technically what is supposed to happen with windows update nowadays...but a lot of people I know turn the thing off because they think microsoft has installed spyware on their machines....retards!!

they then have the nerve to complain that they get hacked/ get viruses!

never used a MAC for any length of time before.....didn't like it so left it well alone.....one mouse button.....f****d up!!

If you want to build an inexpensive fast machine to play games on, then building an AMD machine at the proper price/performance point makes sense. If you want to browse the web and do wordprocessing, sticking with the MAC makes sense. Question is, why did you want to build a machine? Just for the experience? Paying huge $$$ more for Intel makes no sense to me when AMD outperforms in most ways.

A Mac would be cheaper than building a Peecee and you'll get your work done instead of worrying about viruses and spyware.
