I seem to be seeing more and more people offering their 7970s up for sale. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

I'd keep the 7970 if I already bought one, it's those silly 7950's that I'd be unloading ASAP before their price drops out.

As much as I want a gtx 680, I'll be keeping my 7970. I would lose too much money for the increase performance. I'm hoping that with driver updates and my over clock at 1150 it will be enough to overlap the 680 in the future.

Ppl is actually willing to lose ~150$ per card to pick another that averages 10% better performance and won't change their gameplay at all.

Yep. 7970 has a good chance to overclock well and be as fast or faster than the 680. The price and speed of the 7950 though make it pretty bad. If still in the return window I'd send it back.

I have 4 and only need one -- That's why I'm selling some. I really like these 7970's though.

I really don't know why I buy new computer parts ever. I don't think I have in a while and don't plan on it. I'm using a 2600k, mobo, gpu, ssd, I picked up used on the forums for almost half the cost new. Computer enthusiasts are very weird in the fact they'll sell something for a loss just to get the latest and greatest even if it provides no discernible difference. Not that I'm complaining. I get great parts cheap and they get to try out the newest tech. Win win. I'll probably pick up a 7970 or gtx 680 when the next big thing comes out and they start unloading them cheaply.

Not weird at all. Keeping up with the Jones' is the oldest hobby in the world in every field, not just computers.

I'll be going GTX680 but this time around it will be for power consumption and TDP for a SFF build rather than epeen for a change.

Have the 7XXX cards not been living up to expectations? Seems like there are a lot of reports of high temps and not too great OCing.

Some people always buy whatever's the best at any given time, even if it's only a marginal upgrade. If it means cheaper cards for the rest of us, who the hell am I to complain?

Heck the reason why the 7970 grabbed my interest was how almost every one can 1125/1525 on stock voltages, open invitation for overclocking, the reference design is a loud mutha for sure, first time since the gtx295 which i owned as well have i had to go back to using headphones if i want to go pass 1150 core.

Non reference might not suffer the same thing but if a game for me at 1080p demanded performance, heck i would put my card right back at 1200 core and ramp the fan to 70% out of spite.:awe:

Am hearing the exact opposite, that nVidia sent some cherry picked cards to review sites (Some hit 1.3ghz) and the ones people purchased are nowhere close to what was being shown (xbit had a dodgy chip), there’s only so much one can do with so many disparities between chips (Can’t wait for results after a couple of weeks when hype dies down)

£430 = GTX680 - 2GB - 256 bit
£399 = HD7970 - 3GB - 384 bit

imo, re: 680 / 7970 -- they're both great cards and if you are fortunate to own one, consider yourself golden!

It’s funny how people keep saying “price drops are coming”, what nVidia did was retarded, they have nothing close to the amount of chips needed for a launch and AMD is barley coping from the looks of it also.

(For some laughs - check this link out - i fell out my chair laughing lol) http://www.extremetech.com/computin...y-with-tsmc-claims-22nm-essentially-worthless

Don`t expect any major price drops anytime soon and AMD would be silly to drop prices when nVidia have nothing on the table.

I can't decide if i should do that or not. I've got about a week left on the RMA, but is it worth trading out a 7950 for a 680 for casual gaming?

I mostly bought it for a four monitor setup, and gaming on a 60hz monitor with Vsync on whenever possible, where i thought the higher frame buffer and memory bandwidth would come in handy. It's already factory overclocked too, so i don't know weather or not the $450 i paid for it is worth RMA + restocking for the 680 performance edge.

This is the exact opposite of the truth. The 7K series chips run pretty cool (mine averages mid 50's under full load) and they OC like crazy.

As for prices, I highly doubt AMD will drop their prices much any time soon. The GTX680 is a bit faster, but the current quantities are so low then unless people want to wait around for ages, they will just go by an AMD thats in stock.

Did you actually read it?

AMD and Nvidia have a common issue, Nvidia is just being outspoken about it.

What this slide states — we can’t even call it a suggestion — is that smaller processes no longer improve yields by leading to a greater number of chips per wafer. Instead, the complexities and difficulties of manufacturing at the new process create a cost structure that provides precious little incentive to manufacture at the new process.

Thanks for that link, that was a sweet read.

Says to me I should saddle up and expect to pay $700 for a GK110 card. :\

For me that cost isnt worth it. I have my card OC'ed enough that it runs every single game I have on max settings at 60fps or above. Which is all I need. I am more CPU bound then GPU bound currently. I see no reason why this card won't last me 2 years.

That is not an intelligent purchasing decision, it's simply a kid in a candy store holding a $20 bill or giving a hot shallow girl your credit card at Nostrums. These are people who have to have the best and latest. Barnum called them suckers.

680 is a great card no doubt but not worth the hassle and cost of liquidating another great card for nominal gain.

It assumes if nvidia has a problem so must AMD (nvidia is most likely talking its big die here or future one)
