Ok in the hopes that someone can help me out here without me having to reinstall yet again. Here's the synopsis and symptoms.
I had to reinstall Windows because a system restore deleted my ntuser.dat from my profile which exists on a different partition and is accessed through a junction.
After reinstalling Windows I moved the newly created profile's ntuser.dat and accompanying files over to my old profile and created a junction to it. This worked and I was able to log in just fine and have it mostly working. After reinstalling all the apps and such things were looking fine but then I had a series of issues related to permissions.
I took ownership of my Profile of course and can use windows update just fine, however here's what is happening right now.
When I start up my network icon shows an X and says that it's not connected. But it is.
The other symptom is even more annoying. I try to open a folder on my desktop or try to open windows explorer from right clicking the start button, or even right click and personalize.
I get an error:
windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item
If I try to say go into my Control Panel I get:
Can't open access control editor. Access is denied.
Now here's the weird thing. Eventually this stops and I'm once again able to access my Control Panel and folders on my desktop and Windows Explorer etc. But clearly something is wonky.
While in this state trying to install programs seems to be risky as I'm sure their installation gets messed up or something.
I created another profile but it also exhibits the issues (Except for the network icon issue. That is fine under a different profile).
So, any thoughts or ideas other than just wiping everything clean and starting over? Worse case I'll do it but ugh.
