I can not stand any "wannabe" but there are two types that irk me the most:

1. So called "hackers", you know, the ones that say "I hacked my DVD player" when they disable Macrovision, or "I hacked my Xbox/PS2" when they install mod chip. People have no concept of what a hacker is. Just because you can type h4x0r or r0x0r makes you neither a hacker or cool errrrr, sorry, I meant l33t.

2. Another wannabes are "computer experts", the ones that think the world is divided into two halfs: experts and n00bs. Somehow they assume that they were born with the knowledge they have (if any) and look down upon those that can't tell SDRAM from DDR. Those assholes need to get a life and while at it, thank every n00b profusely, becuase of them many of us have real jobs.

People that call DSL routers (aka the little box the ISP gives you) modems. They ARE NOT MODEMS at all!! A modem modulates and demodulates a signal, DSL IS ALL DIGITAL SO THERE IS NO MODULATION OR DEMODULATION THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE!!!! Jeez even if it doesn't do routing the proper term in that case would be a DSL bridge.

a hard disk drive is a form of memory, tho.

Yep, it's called "virtual memory". But what do you expect from a noob

no, the classic computer has 4 parts... one of which is memory, which is just another term for storage. virtual memory would be something at a much higher level than what i'm refering to

Alright, I have a few
1. Those who refer to internet explorer as "the E" and Netscape as "N"
2. Those that believe using different browsers will access a different internet or something
3. And mostly those that ask you for help and afterwards if something goes wrong hints that it was because of something you've changed
4. And lastly how tons of software puts AOL links and shortcuts after you install there program

People looking over your shoulder while you are fixing something on their computer, then when they get lost, commenting on how you click a lot (insinuating that you should slow down for their slow brain). And everything mentioned in this thread bothers the hell out of me, but someone using my mouse/keyboard with greasy fingers is BY far the worst. oh yea and when people press an lcd monitor shockingly hard to "show" you something... thats ridiculous.
I gave up caring when people use incorrect terminology (my internet is down is my personal favorite), I can't correct people without feeling like Nick Burns.

i can reiterate a few that have already been posted:
touching the monitor = of course a big no-no
aim sounds = personally i dont mind them, i leave mine on, but i see what youre saying about the volume on them. when youre sitting in your dorm room and you hear the aim sounds of the guy 4 doors down, thats just too loud
theyre, their, there = not computer related, and call me anal but this one really gets me. i HAVE to correct people. even in casual aim conversations with my friends. it pisses people off but jesus is it really that hard to use the correct one?

and some others:
fancy buttons on keyboard that do stuff other than normal keys, i.e. "back, forward, volume, etc."
my dad always gets "scroll down" and "scroll up" mixed up. i will be helping him look something up, he will say "scroll down", i will start moving down the page, and he'll go *no the other way*
but my #1 alltime pet peeve = my girlfriend, for some reason, when she buys something online, she says *yeah i bought it OFFline*. dont ask me where the hell she got OFF from, i guess its like a mental combination of "online" and "bought it OFF of such and such store". absolutely drives me up the wall.

I would have to give her huge amounts of crap for saying that. Especially on a regular basis...

Another one I have that isn't computer related is people that say tatt instead of tatoo. They need to have their small intestines ripped out by rabid wolves.

ME: "Thank you for calling <company> technical support. What can I do for you today?"

THEM: "My <whatever> isn't working right."

ME: "Okay, when was it last working right?"

THEM: "Yesterday."

ME: "All right. What changes have you made to your computer since yesterday?"

THEM: "Nothing."

AARRGGH! Right. I believe that. Sure. And the tooth fairy exists.

WHAT I WISH I COULD SAY: "Yep, I see that one all the time. It worked yesterday, doesn't work today, and I didn't change a thing! Gosh I hate it when that happens. Well, we can fix you right up here..... oh wait! I'm sorry, I left my magic wand at home today, gee, that's to bad."

WHAT I USUALLY SAY: "I see. Did you install any software? Uninstall any software?"

THEM: "Well, I *did* <whatever>"

ME: "So you *did* make a change since yesterday." (Yes, I really do say this.)

THEM: (ashamed): "Uh, well, yes, I guess I did."

1. Computer Slang - lingo.
2. Companies that call things by witty names that mean nothing to IS. I.E. Calling a new employee video conference "celebration" WTF is that???
3. From my tech support days:

me: Hi this is .... how can i help you
them: the server is down

That and people who think all thier problems are related to the magic switch you have under your desk, therefore not needing them to tell you anything or do anything.

My last day i got this, so i said hang on a minute. "Hey jethro, have you been switching mr. (so and so)'s internet switch again! I told you not to do that." "ok sir, try it now."

I had a lady insist that Internet Explorer was giving her the error "the satalite is down"

It bugs me when someone calls a Network card a NIC Card. NIC = Network Interface Card. So saying NIC Card is like saying "NETWORK INTERFACE CARD CARD" I don't know..
