I recently got myself an ASUS PG278Q. I've been encountering a strange problem for the last few days when the display keeps switching itself on and off when I keep the pc idle for a long time. Yesterday, it just wouldn't start. I kept fiddling with all the power cables but it just wouldn't start. I then unplugged and replugged the display port cable and voila it starts. However, all the display menu options are with artifacts i.e. it looks corrupted.
Is this a display port cable issue or something else?

Switch to HDMI or DVI and see if you have any issues.

I have seen display port issues in several monitors so it wouldn't shock me if this is another one.

Ok, I kinda feel like an idiot that I didn't try that myself. "Brain fade" or panic I guess from realizing that my new monitor may be screwed. Anyways, I'm at work and will try with HDMI when I get back home.
Thank you good sir.

That unit does not have DVI or HDMI inputs. The trouble is not likely the cable since a cable weakness would be there from the start, not after a long time working well. For certainty, try another one and then contact ASUS if the distortion continues. Be prepared to return it under warranty.

What kind of moron designs a monitor with JUST displayport input?

That seems like a product design failure. HDMI 2.0 supports 18Gbps 1440p 144hz is only ~12.7Gbps. I really can't fathom why they'd do this.

I just realized that it doesn't have any other ports. Will just have to wait for the new cable and check.

I know man. No way to find out if the monitor has crapped out or if it is just the cable.

Ok, so it is NOT the cable because the same problem persist even with the new cable. The monitor is under warranty, so I get a full replacement right?

So the Asus guys came to check the monitor and accepted that it is faulty. Not the panel though, but the main motherboard and power module (what he said). However, they do not do a complete replacement of the monitor. They only replace the parts which is free of cost though since it's still under warranty.
I'm a little skeptical now though regarding the longevity of this monitor. I know that electronics like these that get opened up rarely last long. And to think I got this monitor in Jan 2017 after a good 2-3 months of watching reviews makes me feel so so bad.

Ok, so the Asus representative changed the mainboard which got rid of the weird menu artifacts. It seems proper.
However, the monitor again started switching itself off and on repetitively. I'm just super frustrated. Since the repair guy had already left, I once again had to lodge a fresh complaint with Asus which will take another few days to resolve it looks like.
Could this frequent restarting be due to a problem with the power module that comes with the monitor?

It does sound like a power issue.

There is a known issue with a model of the power bricks supplied with this monitor (the square shaped one's). I have had to replace all 3 of mine with the rectangular models available for about 30 bucks on ebay.

However the issue I was facing was the monitor refusing to power up after extended sleep. Replacing the brickssame completely cleared it up on all 3

Likely a completely separate issue but Just wanted to flag that those square bricks are very flakey.

Apologies for no model numbers but have just got off night shift and must sleep before my eyes fall out.
