Well, if the PII isn't really a competitor(remember we don't have actual retail samples to review on any tech site, just some forum posts with unvalidated screenshots of a cpu-z window) then Intel could play it like Nvidia did with Video cards for the past year prior to the 4870 release. Although I don't believe that would be the case because Intel hasn't really been gouging on their current CPU lineup. I think $320 for a Q9550 is a very fair price. You may disagree with me and that's fine, we all have different price levels we want to see.

They could probably also sell higher binned quads (3.4 GHz or 3.5 GHz), but again they don't need to to compete with performance.

I was pretty much just guessing that they would cut prices lol. I dunno if it will actually happen. I guess it depends on how well the AMD chips are. Either way I wanted to get into a quad. I may just get a q6600 g0 for now since they are cheap.

I will be buying and building a completely new system likely between now and the end of January, my money is going towards a Q9550 as of now - prove me wrong anand or others!

If you do things that really take advantage of quadcore then you should be entertaining the idea of an i7 920.

I would buy an i7 920 tomorrow, what I don't entertain is the thought of dropping $500 on a mobo/ram combo.

That's because you are talking about buying it tomorrow (or rather today) versus waiting till Feb after the AM3 Phenom II chips are out.
I wouldn't recommend buying current first-rev mobo's or first retail stepping i7's to anyone. Wait for the second round of these products if you want to avoid being a "pay-to-play" beta-tester.

Now is the 920 and 940 the only ones being released on December 20th/January 8th or will the new Phenom X3s and X2s be out at the same time?
